Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Well, Jane, it's not that bad, and you were very good. Dwan's use of color here and in Slightly Scarlet was excellent, in spite of his having said he hated color.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Well, kingrat, since you've been looking over Allan Dwan's filmography, you know that he made literally hundreds of movies. As a matter of fact, some have suggested that Imdb's tally of 405 is way short! Statistically speaking, eighty to ninety percent of his silents are lost, but this still leaves ...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Little Old New York is available from Grapevine Video. Quality Street is another matter. It was an extra(!) on Image's out of print disc Captured on Film The True Story of Marion Davies, one of the best of the usually shoddy movie star biographies. Netflix still has this. I think a little more time ...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Glad that you also liked Getting Mary Married, Wendy. Have you seen other Davies silents? I'm very fond of Show People and The Patsy, and I have DVDs of Little Old New York, The Red Mill, and Quality Street, my favorite. The talkies have some wonderful moments, but I think she was getting tired of i...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Well, I had a real treat today, thanks to Grapevine Video who have just released Getting Mary Married, a 1919 romantic comedy by Allan Dwan, John Emerson, and Anita Loos, and starring Marion Davies in her early twenties. This is probably the earliest Dwan I have seen and certainly the earliest Davie...

Re: CORNELL WOOLRICH : King of Noir
Yes, a few months ago, I picked a tape off the shelf that was labeled No Man of Her Own, and it was the wrong one. I should be more careful with my labels!

Re: CORNELL WOOLRICH : King of Noir
Woolrich was essentially a short-form writer. Most of his novels are episodic and can be seen as a series of set-pieces tied together with a frame story. I Married a Dead Man is an exception and probably his best novel. Another exception is Waltz Into Darkness, his longest and heaviest novel which b...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
During a screening of So This Is Paris during MOMA's virtually complete Lubitsch retrospective in the seventies, about ten minutes after the Charleston contest, a reel already projected appeared. Arthur Kleiner, the pianist at that time did not miss a beat, but managed to ring up the booth. The audi...
