Re: Red River

I've just learned there's a remake of BLIND DATE that features the Ninja Turtles! Oops Paula the getting off from a full gallop is indeed a trick, and not something you wuld normally do but part of the trick is to stop the horse in perfect balance and using the balance to stop you. The horse basica...

Re: Red River

So basically the good rider lets the horse do the work without yanking him around, and doesn't get in the way? He trusts the horse to do it and doesn't use the reins to hold himself in place on the horse's back? I think I got it now. Thanks, dee! That's it which basically means watch Ben Johnson ri...

Re: Red River

I think sometimes "looking good" is a give away because the actor is using his body to imitate someone riding, rather than working with the horse. One with the horse. As for Glen Ford's arms. Some very good riders have very bad habits. Their balance is so good they get away with it. Ben Jo...

Re: Red River

A lot of actors look good by sitting up or because they are put on horses that know the routine but they cannot really ride. Robert Fuller tells a funny story about how he was sitting quietly reading a script on Laramie and he saw the chief wrangler put a "New York" actor on the resident l...

Re: Red River

Red River is also a great favourite, although and this is ridiculous I know, I dislike the ending so much I usually stop the disc before it ends. I still don't get the widow's weeds either, I don't understand what Hawkes was trying to do. But other parts are special. The beginning when Dunstan leave...

Re: *CANDIDS*

That mug shot at least explains why people are always saying some onefamous looks short when they meet them in person. On screen you are looking at the "whole" person, in this case 5'9" The perspective would be the full body but in person you look at the person's eyes and face which i...

For those who have not read it Chuck (Bad Chuck) Roberson's autobiography The Fall Guy is available on Kindle http://www.amazon.com/The-Fall-Guy-Double-ebook/dp/B009K8QMFU/ Not to be missed for anyone interested in John Wayne, John Ford, James Stewart or stuntmen in general ( the old time variety) o...

Re: Dobe

I was just looking through Amazon books and was stunned to find that even the second hand copies of Company of Heroes (Dobe's book and one of the best ever written about Hollywood) were listed for around $300. I know I paid nothing like that for my copy a few years ago. I would like to think the mon...

Re: John Ford

Thanks Paula. Terrific articles. I can't help wishing that some more film makers would take note of the idea of the audience not being aware of the camera

Re: John Ford

I find such connections to Bellah's works really fascinating because I have never read his short stories, just seen comments about his less than generous views about Indians and always wondered what Ford's attraction was.

Thank you for the article.

Re: Ben Johnson

Are you sure it is not Melinda, Patrick's other sister. Melinda was the daughter who was in a couple of John Ford's films, the Quiet Man and like her brother one ofthe captive children in Rio Grande.

Just wondering

Re: John Wayne, Lest We Forget

This is another John Wayne as a normal person (if you happen to own a boat). I saw it ages ago but it took me a while to find it.
