I can't rationalize the success of some of the big screen names of today :? .Many of the top women stars are around fortyish, that's no bad age but sometimes they play characters that are too young for them. Why can't they play forty and be proud or mid thirties. Maybe I'm just being a grouch :P It...

I'm still pretty new here myself, but hey, welcome! Is that Synnöve or Synnøve? And just out of interest, how did you discover silents and precodes? Outside my household (where none of the kids watch that crappy old stuff but get to hear me rabbitting on about it), I don't know an 18 year old who's ...

one of the amazing things about Arizona was you don't really notice she's 18-yrs older than her co-star William Holden. however, there is one thing about the film i'm uneasy with. for three quarters of the film we see Arthur fighting her own battles, running her freight outfit from the back of a ho...

I have no idea about the men. I know my better half would write a list that would include Johnny Depp at the top but I have no idea myself. As for the ladies: 3. Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy is as sexy as it gets. 2. Rosanna Arquette looking at the camera in Amazon Women on the Moon makes me melt ev...

Jon, I think you can definitely deal with this. The creators of that dreaded, presumptuous MS3TK should all be forced to live together on an island and watch Anthony Hopkins movies for eternity. That hideous program has done more to discourage people from enjoying the pure delirium of great primiti...

I grew up on these films and have seen most of them but I haven't seen any for far too long. I couldn't begin to list favourites or least favourites. My favourite scene is a gimme though: it's the dinner party in Carry On... Up the Khyber. IMHO, it's the most quintessentially British scene ever put ...

I recorded all four of the James Ellroy picks and this is the only one I haven't got round to watching yet. I think there was a discussion somewhere else at SSO that talked about the general concept of guest programmers and I commented that most are worthless but a few are gems. James Ellroy was a r...

Young Guns was OK, I guess. Nothing special and very '80s (1980s not 1880s though, unfortunately). There's a cool scene where Billy comes face to face with his exaggerated legend, but the best fun is really watching Emilio Estevez flounder around trying to wield his guns. He's the best thing in the ...

Re: lillian Gish, should have been the greatest ever actress

It's just my opinion, but if circumstances had been different, i think Lillian Gish would have been right up there with the likes of Bette Davis and Kate Hepburn as the screens greatest ever actress. You mean she wasn't the screen's greatest ever actress? I'm a big fan of Bette and Kate and a whole...

Sore subject for me, unfortunately. I'm a regular at a local budget cinema that hosts weekly exploitation nights courtesy of a local Kiwi called Midnite Movie Mamacita. I raced home on Friday night from a Lucio Fulci double bill (Zombie and City of the Living Dead), in which both films were subtitle...

Like everyone else in England I grew up on Dr Who, though I never watched from behind the couch. I subscribed to Dr Who Magazine. I have most of the novelisations. I even learned to type properly by bringing Dr Who plot synopses to typing class (I originally learned to type by typing in code from co...

I may actually have to go see this one on the big screen too, even though I know it would be for the eye candy only. It's a Roland Emmerich movie, so I know the story is going to be truly awful but hopefully it'll be so inconsequential that I can easily ignore it and watch all the glorious prehistory.

X from Outer Space has been shown before on TCM. Here's what I wrote when I watched it back in 2006: I'm really enjoying myself lately. Not only did TCM's Robert Osborne have to introduce Creature with the Atom Brain, but also The X from Outer Space, a truly ludicrous kaiju movie starring a half liz...

Re: Hopkins wins special Bafta, Julie loses out

Julie Christie, who's hotly tipped for a Best Actress Oscar lost out to a European girl, who played Edith Piaf in a foriegn movie. so maybe the Oscar isn't a forgone conclusion for Julie. i saw a clip of the film and the girl looks pretty good as the legendary French singer I haven't seen La Vie en...
