Re: BLACK MOON (1933) early FRI am
I recorded this one and enjoyed very much. Then again Fay Wray, Jack Holt and Clarence Muse... what's not to like?

Re: A Womans Secret - The Great O' Malley
The Great O'Malley was fun but inconsequential. It was a pretty blatant story but it was played out pretty well given the talent of the names involved.

Re: TCM Classic Film Festival (April 22-25, 2010)
We don't have tickets yet but we're seriously thinking about it. Hollywood is driveable for Phoenix if we aim at a week and do some sightseeing first. The price is steep but not outrageous. Every single one of these films has special guest appearances, Q&As etc. I'm sure there's going to be a lo...

Re: Great Directors Theme of the Month on TCM in May
I'm looking forward to many of the same ones you are and I'm sure we're not alone. I watch a lot of movies on TCM but there's so much good stuff that I rarely watch them twice. Instead I keep my eyes open for stuff that they haven't shown before or at least not for a long while. So I'll be recording...

Re: JAPANESE MOVIES - ANY OTHER FANS ?
I've seen a few Kurosawas since my last post here, all new to me. Ikiru is the famous one, and it had eluded me for the longest time. I'm happy to say that I found it as powerful as the critics maintain. Takashi Shimura was stunning. The other couple go together and date way back to the beginning of...

Re: Sci-Fi That Makes You Think
And I recently saw another recent film that fits this category. Primer is a 2004 independent film, apparently made for $7,000 (though anyone who's read Joe Queenan's The Unkindest Cut: How a Hatchet-Man Critic Made His Own $7,000 Movie and Put It All on His Credit Card can't help but doubt that). It...

I remember watching Ran for the first time and Hero , the colours used are amazing. I haven't seen anywhere near enough Zhang Yimou, though I have seen Raise the Red Lantern and Hero, both superb films, among others. He obviously doesn't need recommendation as many have beaten me to it. I'd like to...

Oh boy, I've missed this place! Bryce, I actually agree with much of what you say, but I think you misunderstood my intentions. My apologies if my stream of consciousness post was misleading. I would argue your comment 'cult films and nothing more' though. Yes, much of what I talked about could safe...

Billy Connolly is always fun, and while he's known fundamentally for comedy he's a versatile talent. Two roles spring quickly to mind, though the films are very different and I'd only recommend one for more than Connolly. He was the title character in Fido , a quirky Canadian zombie movie that reall...

Konnichiwa! Yes, this is a very welcome thread. Japanese cinema is a fascinating thing, and there's much to recommend from other east Asian countries nowadays too. Mr Arkadin's list is a solid one from what my viewing can back up, though I've only seen half of the films on it. It certainly includes ...

Kongo is a wild film. I saw it before the Lon Chaney original, which promptly disappointed. I'm not used to that with Chaney. My vote has to be Freaks , but Kongo isn't far behind. I'd love to see those as a double bill on the big screen. I can dream, huh? Employees' Entrance springs to mind too, a...

I can happily throw a new film into the mix: Jerome Bixby's The Man from Earth . It apparently came out in 2007 but I saw it last week at a local horror and sci fi film festival, so it's certainly still doing the rounds. I was stunned by this film, which completely fits the 'thinking' requirement he...

I'll second the inclusion of Joan Blondell and Ruth Chatterton on a list like this. Very different actresses, but both always very watchable indeed. I'd throw into the hat Helen Chandler. Sure, her name is well known because of Dracula, but she did so much more than that and nobody seems to remember...
