Re: CARY GRANT
I think the widescreen opened up tremendous film possibilities and I treasure it for things like Lawrence of Arabia, say, along with any epic in which the landscape is as much part of the story as the characters. The problem I have today is over-reliance on effects and mindless action at the expense...

Re: Katharine Hepburn
I'm a big fan of Hepburn, particularly her early comic work. She was a great lady too, by most accounts. I read one of her biographies and found her a fascinating individual.

Re: CARY GRANT
Hitch definitely had a near perfect casting eye, and not just with Grant and Stewart, of course. That said, with regard to Cary Grant, I bet there are more IMDB blurbs for movies in his era that begin "the lead role was originally offered to/intended for Cary Grant before casting (so and so gre...

Re: CARY GRANT
Thanks for bringing Cary Grant to the forefront Lomm. I haven’t seen so many immediate responses to a thread here at the Oasis in a long time ( other than when the Moderators bring us a special guest writer. ) And may I also extend my belated Welcome to you on this message board. Enjoy your time he...

I have to see Love Crazy now, if only to see Bill Powell in drag.

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK
Hoo, man, if there's one director I could go on and on about, it's Hitch. To pick one from above, Rope is wonderful, from the performances he brought out of the actors to the illusion of a single cut of film...so ahead of his time, a pioneer in the literal sense of the word, from his earliest Americ...

Re: CARY GRANT
Thinking about it, The Awful Truth is probably the best of Grant's comedic roles. Very ahead of its time in terms of the treatment and attitudes toward marriage. I wouldn't be surprised if modern audiences could appreciate it even more than viewers of the time, and see even more humor in all the sit...

Re: Took a lot to get here, but registered at last...so hello!
I love Indiscreet. The scene at the ball where Grant is just hamming it up, not realizing everyone there has found him out and despises him is hilarious. Thanks everyone, for the greetings. I'm enjoying myself here, finding people who actually care to talk about classic film. I tend to bore th...

Re: CARY GRANT
Now that you mention what are your top 10 Grant films? This was harder than I thought it would be. I had to leave off Gunga Din, Penny Serenade, and Houseboat. Maybe I should have had a tie for the tenth slot! 1. Charade 2. North By Northwest 3. To Catch a Thief 4. The Awful Truth 5. Holiday 6. Tha...

Re: Audrey Hepburn...
Love in the Afternoon was the only film where the age difference was pronounced enough to make me almost uncomfortable at times. I guess it wasn't so much to viewers at the time? Such pairings boiled down to the studio being anxious to get their new darling on screen with the top actors of the day.....

Re: CARY GRANT
Before I saw Arsenic I knew him only from the Hitchcock films he'd done; the comic pratfalls and exaggerated movements/acting came as a total surprise to me. It prompted me to immediately start seeking out all of his work, and further led me to becoming a huge classic cinema fan. For that, Arsenic w...

The linked video above has been taken down, but I found another upload of it. Amazing! I'm not entirely sure how I feel about bringing the dead back to life, but this does open up some tremendous possibilities. Here is the working video, if anyone missed it the first time around: [youtube]http://www...

Re: CARY GRANT
Just picking the most recently posted to Cary Grant thread to post about him, maybe generate a bit of discussion. Cary Grant is, without a doubt, my top male actor of all time. From his earlier, more comedic roles to the Hitchcock action adventure star, to his late romantic comedies with people like...

Re: YOU Tube'n
Thanks, Lomm. It's always great to discover stuff on youtube, though it sometimes disappears way too quickly. I don't think that is as likely to happen to Public Domain films. Do you recommend any particular movies there that you enjoyed? I'm a terrible judge, because I tend to enjoy almost any cla...

Re: YOU Tube'n
I haven't read the whole thread but I skimmed several pages and didn't see this. I thought many of you might be interested in the YouTube "public domain" channel. It's chock full of old films (and TV shows) that have fallen out of copyright. Not just obscure stuff either; there are big nam...
