Re: Otto Preminger (1906-1986)

charliechaplinfan, I know you love Cluny Brown. Poet Samuel Hoffenstein and Betty Reinhardt wrote the screenplay for Cluny Brown. They are the same writers who wrote the screenplay for Laura after Preminger worked with Jay Dratler on an early draft. With Preminger, Samuel Hoffenstein and Betty Reinh...

Re: Otto Preminger (1906-1986)

I agree with you that Waldo was a mentor to Laura and we know that her career started with Waldo's endorsement and also with his several contributions. But it must be noted that they had a very close relationship. As we both know, they dined together at Waldo's home on every tuesday night and every ...

Re: Otto Preminger (1906-1986)

SPOILERS (Laura) I want to share this to both of you. I am interested in hearing both of your opinions about this. I thought Waldo was in love with Laura. As you know, Waldo gave her a wonderful career through his endorsements and other important contributions. We see that Laura was very happy with ...

Re: Otto Preminger (1906-1986)

I haven't seen Advise and Consent (1962). But I will try to watch it when I have a chance. I know Gene Tierney was greatful for Preminger, because he wanted her in this film. This was the time period when she was in extreme depression. But Preminger's encouragement brought her back and also helped h...

Re: Otto Preminger (1906-1986)

My favorite film from Otto Preminger is Laura (1944), because of its strong depth. I think Laura would have been a disaster if it was directed under Rouben Mamoulian. Preminger brought in Samuel Hoffenstein and Betty Reinhardt to do the screenplay after he worked with Jay Dratler on the first draft ...

Re: Ernst Lubitsch and his films

charliechaplinfan, no problem. I also thank you for recommending I Know Where I'm Going (1945). I loved it. MissG, I think censors would have allowed Henry to kiss another woman. For Example, we see Professor Siletsky kissing Maria (Carole Lombard) in Lubitsch's To be or not to be (1942). But Lubits...

Re: Ernst Lubitsch and his films

SPOILERS (Heaven Can Wait) MissG, What do you think about Heaven Can Wait? charliechaplinfan, I finally ended up getting time to write the review "properly" for Heaven Can Wait (1943). I think you will like Heaven Can Wait better after you read this review. "Heaven for Henry Van Cleve...

Re: Ernst Lubitsch and his films

SPOILERS (Heaven Can Wait) Below is my viewpoint on Heaven can Wait (1943). To me, this film is about the successes and failures through a flawed man named Henry Van Cleve who admits his own weaknesses. Henry has a kind and loving heart. But his weaknesses (his romantic affairs) dominates him at the...

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

SPOILERS (Stage fright, Vertigo, and Psycho) I don't know if anyone noticed this. But Stage Fright foreshadowed many of Hitchcock's later films including Vertigo and Psycho. One of them was that Jonathan Cooper's story towards Eve Gill is part true and part invented. This is just like Gavin Elster's...

Re: Ernst Lubitsch and his films

I agree with you, charliechaplinfan. One of the most powerful moments in the film is Lionel Barrymore's speech at the restaurant in front of other old men. Samson Raphaelson cowrote the screenplay for Broken Lullaby. Samson Raphaelson was Lubitsch's favorite screenwriter. Samson Raphaelson wrote the...

Re: Ernst Lubitsch and his films

Ernst Lubitsch made one drama called Broken Lullaby. It was an interesting drama starring Lionel Barrymore. Playwright Robert Sherwood praised it when this film was released. Like The Shop around the Corner, Lubitsch's humor in Heaven Can Wait is done in a lighter angle. Ernst Lubitsch and Samson Ra...

Re: Ernst Lubitsch

Laird Cregar was a great actor. Aside from his performance in Heaven Can Wait, He was great in I wake up screaming, the lodger, and Hangover Square. I believe his performance dominates the entire film "I wake up screaming." I believe this is also the same case with Kathleen Byron in Black ...
