"Shock Treatment", 1964, Roddy McDowell, Stuart Whitman and Lauren Bacall. German titles at the opening of the film, but the rest is in English.

Re: I Just Watched...
Basehart was in 'Decision Before Dawn" (Anatole Litvak) the following year, 1951. It's a very good film, with a young Oscar Werner in a stand-out performance.

" Pitfall ", 1948, Andre De Toth. Dick Powell, Lizabeth Scott, Jane Wyatt It's a good film and Dick's 'everyman' is a totally surprising 'victim' in this noir. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrmhR_ly1BE&t=608s So glad to be able to discuss these films here. I sent my sister a Youtube ...

" Hell Drivers ", 1957, Rank Organization, Cy Enfield Director. A British noir which is actually very well made and acted by a cast of nascent British big-name actors like Sean Connery. Stanley Baker is in the leading role and he's typically intense and pugilistic. Geoffrey Unsworth cinema...

Re: Noir Alley
Ida Lupino was a superb actress and director; not enough has been made of the fact that she was a pioneering figure in the film industry.

Re: What B&W films would you consider visually "beautiful"?
Olivier's "Hamlet". A film certainly influenced by Citizen Kane and directed by a stage actor. A magnificent film, though I didn't think the Ophelia scenes worked convincingly. It has been restored. An artefact for the ages!! From 2:14:00 you'll see 2 or 3 minutes of not only beautiful lig...

QUEEN CHRISTINA (1933) was also on TCM the other day. I've seen it before, but I like it better and better. The more I look at GRETA GARBO , the more interesting I find her. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0b/Poster_-_Queen_Christina_02_Crisco_restoration.jpg/330px-Poster_-_Q...

Re: I Just Watched...
I just watched on YouTube " The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone ", starring Helen Mirren. It's a remake of the famous film with Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty from circa 1964. The costumes worn by Mirren were stunning, but she's so cold-blooded an actress it's hard to develop sympathy with her ...

Re: Best And Worst Mothers In Film
Perhaps I could have used a more obvious example of a poor mother in film, than a subtle one. But we do see in life, over and over, women making poor choices of a partner which directly affects daughters in a very bad way - as in this case. The Lana Turner/Cheryl Crane case comes to mind. Shelley Wi...

Best: Eugenie Leontovich, "Four Sons " Dorothy McGuire, " A Tree Grows in Brooklyn " Worst: Shelley Winters, " Lolita " Betty Field, " Picnic " I'm curious why you believe the Winters' mother in Lolita was that bad. From the POV of a husband, I can see her be...

Re: What B&W films would you consider visually "beautiful"?
In fact, monochrome is my preferred medium for film. I adore celluloid, it's grain and textures. How well I remember going to the cinema since childhood and loving the fact of its being an 'object' and photographic, in the literal sense. Today the dance and movement of the camera still excites as mu...

A beautiful-looking film, with stunning performances all round. James Dunn here in the most moving scene in the film. Beautifully lit.
