I think that The Magnificent Ambersons (even in the cut that survives) is a better film than Kane . I like Kane a great deal and I think it is a ground breaking film but have never felt it was the best film ever made and I think that Ambersons' trumps it in the end for enjoyment and story telling.

Marco,

My favorite Bernard Herrmann score is one of his last, Obession. It's even a good Brian DePalma film that owes more than a passing nod to Vertigo which is my third favorite Herrmann score.

My second favorite The Magnificent Ambersons.

It must be tiresome for Mr. Scott to travel around with his own choir.
But I didn't even know he had one. >>

Kyle,

The townsfolks from Blazing Saddles are the chorus that follows R. Scott around.

Hand over heart in unison: "Randolph Scott!"

Chris, I think we of the Southern California contingent have been here for a total of almost fifty years (between the three of us that I know of, Kyle, Filmlover and Me). I am celebrating 30 years in Los Angeles this Labor Day and the other two have been here quite some year as well. I guess what I ...

The UCLA Film and Television Archive is showing the Kim Stanley TV version (which costars Salome Jens) one week, followed by the Stanwyck version the next week so that we can compare the two, I guess. Also, the TV version is being hosted by the author of "T he Female Brando: The Legend of Kim S...

I would be very interested in hearing comments from anyone who has seen clips or the new release of "The Gang's All Here".

I'm familiar with the controversy over the color but I am looking for folks who have actually seen it and care to comment.

I'm finishing up " Nitrate Won't Wait: A History of American Film Preservation ", then I'm going to go for something lighter and read Joe Wambaugh's new book Hollywood Station . I have been a Wambaugh fan since reading his first book almost forty years ago. Then I'll probably get a tad nos...

Anne, Glad to see that you enjoyed Fort Apache. I agree, I wish it had been done in color, but it was post war RKO and they didnt' have alot of bucks those years. I love George O'Brien and Anna Lee (was she ever a beauty- I believe modern soap audiences know her for her long running role on General ...

Gone With or Without fanfare

Hope Joe/Bansai/Mongo II doesn't mind but I wanted somewhere to post that Pulitizer Prize winning author David Halberstam ( The Fifties , The Children about the Civil Rights Movement's early days and other great books) has died. He was in an auto accident and the car he was a passenger in was broads...

Moira, Mark Slade was indeed, a teen idol. His picture often graced the covers of 16 and Teen Beat Magazines as I recall. Bobby Sherman from Here Come the Brides was the other constant cover boy of that era. I remember the High Chapperal fondly. It was on Sundays, early in the evening. I was smiling...

I think one of the things important for anyone who might be thinking of entering is to be enthusiastic. Know what two or four films you would want to show and why. It's probably less about the film history facts and more about why movies are important to you. It's less about being able to sit next t...
