Well I've been on a Kay Francis kick for the past few days. I saw Jewel Robbery , Mary Stevens MD and Living on Velvet for the first time and revisited One Way Passage . Over the years I've seen Kay in The House on 56th Street , Wonder Bar , My Bill , In Name Only and The Feminine Touch . When this ...

Hi Molo -- I think any time the discussion about a film drifts into one about the hairstyle of the actress then it's safe to say that there's something deficient about the film. Phil Karlson, the director of TIGHT SPOT made several far superior noir films during his career, namely SCANDAL SHEET (52...

Well I missed Rouge Cop. :( I liked Ginger in Tight Spot a little more than the movie itself. I thought it was a good later role for her and yes I know that a discussion over at TCM did devolve into a debate on her hair. I think the film really depends on the viewer buying into her character....

I haven't read Lambert's biography which is hailed as the best book written about Norma, but as a fan I recommend you to try to find "Norma" by Lawrence J. Quirk, which I obtained (a used copy) at Amazon and is a nice read and "The Films of Norma Shearer" (of the Citadel Press s...

When I saw this thread I was moved to write a little essay on Norma Shearer. I hope you will indulge me. :) Norma Shearer has always fascinated me. I think it's because when I first discovered her as a kid in the mid-seventies she was a complete enigma. People like Pauline Kael and David Thomson did...

Frankie seems to have been Warners go to guy in the early thirties when they needed a tough, spunky juvenile. Wild Boys of the Road is one of my favorite Wellman precoders. Darro really carries the picture. Another favorite of mine is The Mayor of Hell a dark precode with him playing a rebellious in...

Feaito,
Thanks for the welcome. There are so many interesting topics here. Where to begin?

Hi Pat,
Yes Three Wise Fools is wonderful. Why can't more people get that?
Hopefully TCM will get their print fixed.

I notice that, during my history of rewatching films, it's invariably the good supporting cast that makes the film wonderfully rewatchable. Allen Jenkins. Charles Lane. Jerome Cowan. Marjorie Main. Louis Calhern. Victor McLaglen. Barry Fitzgerald - well, just about the whole John Ford travelling tr...

I came at Virginia O'Brien backwards, seeing Merton of the Movies , which was the last of her forties film run, first. I saw the film because Gloria Grahame was in it and I have to see and write about every film Grahame was in. It's a compulsion. :) Well I was immediately taken with O'Brien's perfor...

The Fred and Ginger films had a look and style that sets them apart from the other musicals Fred made. The early ones especially had a certain gloss that must have sparked the dreams of countless depression era filmgoers. I've been slowing making my way back through their films recently. The Gay Div...
