Kino was able to release Peter Pan because Paramount never owned it, which was a mandate of James Barrie.

Those were all excellent releases; problem was that, for once, Paramount was way ahead of the curve, sales were disappointing so now they won't even consider any silent film releases. I do wish they would grant video rights on a per film basis to Flicker Alley, Kino, Lobster, etc.

I have an import Japanese laserdisc of the 1926 Beau Geste, and I don't think any other film I've ever seen drew me in and absolutely hooked me right from the start as this one did. Part of why it's not more well known is that it's a Paramount and they're just not interested in their silent catalog ...

Guess I can stop trying to do a 'perfect' transfer of the Griffith documentary that I taped from PBS back in the early 90's - yes, it is long overdue for a DVD release. Aside from that it's a disappointing set in my eyes - Hearts of the World, Isn't Life Wonderful, The Sorrows of Satan, Judith of Be...

"We expect to release BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT on DVD through Flicker Alley next year, thanks to Warner Bros. and Sony who have both given the necessary permissions. It's no masterpiece, but it is a first-class Hollywood marshmallow, and lavishly produced. It is also a rather short film (especi...

There are excerpts of the Duncan Sisters' late 20's film Topsy and Eva posted somewhere on the internet, I found them once but I don't remember where. UPDATE: I did a quick search and found the link: http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/saxon/utc/onstage/films/cameos/duncclips.html These clips can ...

Some of the information in Black Shadows is a little out of date - when it was made only one of Oscar Micheaux's films was known to exist but two others have since been found. They also used no clips of The Birth of a Race in that documentary but it does exist, and excerpts of it were included in th...

well I could have sharpened the image up more, but I tend to overdo that and am very conscious of it so I probably under did it this time. Glad you enjoyed it. I know people talk about older formats not being up to digital standards but I still don't see why you couldn't get a perfectly acceptable D...

Absolutely my pleasure, and I feel exactly the same as you do about it. I have never bought any of the DVD versions of Broken Blossoms and never will unless the Thames version becomes available - my DVD-R dub from the laserdisc will suit me just fine.

Actually, even in black and white photography you can tell that Colleen's eyes were different colors if you look close enough. The dollhouse is fascinating, it was designed by Hollywood set/interior designers and wired by Hollywood lighting techinicians; it is so stuffed full oh miniature treasures,...

I put Keaton and Chaplin atop a pinnacle, could never choose between the two, and Lloyd one level below them on his own. Llangdon, for me, rises above the rabble of Billy Bevans and Larry Semons and such, and Laurel & Hardy are a category all their own, having done only two-reelers in the silent...
