The July 2013 TCM Schedule

Post by moira finnie »

The month of July, featuring Star of the Month Paul Henreid on Tuesday nights and some classic interviews drawn from the Johnny Carson years on The Tonight Show on TCM, is almost upon us. Here's a link to the full schedule (which, of course is subject to change):

http://www.tcm.com/schedule/july2013.html

Lest I neglect mentioning this, the rarely aired and obscure Men of the North, with a certain Gilbert Roland, is airing at 6am ET on July 1st.

I thoroughly enjoyed Carson on TCM, and enjoyed Conan O'Brien's reverent, no-nonsense approach to his introductions. Drew Barrymore was adorable, and obviously charmed Mr. Carson.

It seemed like Johnny and Kirk Douglas were very agenda-driven as Kirk wanted to promote his book and Johnny wanted to find out more about Kirk's unwritten escapades, and it made for a very lively interview.

I also felt Mary Tyler Moore, who looked so beautiful in the peachy-melon pantsuit, did reveal a little of her personal approach to life. But listening to Neil Simon discuss writing a play or script was fascinating, and once again, I truly miss Johnny Carson's ability to draw out unusual or revelatory comments from his guests.

His last guest, George Burns was cute and lively. I enjoyed it when he said his doctor was dead while he was puffing on his big cigar.

This was an entertaining trip down memory lane for me. I am so glad TCM decided to air these interviews. The first time we watched these shows, they all had commercial interruptions!

I saw MTM, George Burns and Neil Simon. Burns was hilarious. But my hope is that if we could see an hour with Johnny with Suzanne Pleshette and Phyllis Newman...that would be fantastic. Those were two bawdy saucy ladies who could really get Johnny going!

When Suzanne Pleshette was a guest, Johnny had to be READY!

And Phyllis was always fun to watch, too.

Drew Barrymore was the CUTEST, oh my gosh! What a great rapport they had! Johnny was sweet with her. I loved it when she kept mentioning Steven Spielberg and Johnny acted jealous and said he was always coming in second with the ladies.

I LOVED Johnny's plum colored suit when he was interviewing George Burns! Oh he was so good looking. Now I'm older I can see why the women flocked to him. I'd love to see him interview Henry Fonda - both from Nebraska, both entertainers, both rather romantic men, but too reticent in real life.

If you missed it, this was the moment Sue Sue was talking about with George Burns. It made me laugh right out loud:

I LOVE watching Johnny crack up.

And some 20+ years later Drew flashes Letterman. I'm glad she didn't do that to Robert. He may not have been able to handle it.

I wonder since Dean Martin and Bob Hope were guests they'd show the famous George Gobel clip.

I bet Drew is embarrassed by that. But you know what? She was playing to the audience of that show. RO would have dropped his TCM coffee mug.

I don't know if they will show George Gobel...Conan said last night that they were not necessarily showing the clips everyone has seen, but instead focusing on classic film stars and TCM related interviews. That being said, it's one of the funniest clips, and like you said, both Dean and Bob are movie stars...

It may well be one of the funniest things ever on Carson for my money but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it didn't show up. I completely forgot it was on so I missed it all.

Wendy, that George Burns moment is truly priceless. His timing when he delivers that line is absolutely perfect.

Gosh, we're lucky to have those clips and such memories of when the guests on late night talk shows truly were "stars" . . . and entertaining. I admit I tune into these late night programs today and often don't recognize who the "celebrity" is.

Wasn't it wonderful, Stone? You are right about George's timing, that line is hilarious mainly because of the way he snuck it in before anyone really knew where he was going with it. And Johnny's reply to that blue cigar holder joke was pretty great too, it actually made George laugh. They really entertained each other, and that made us entertained back then. It was exciting to have these people in your home each night. :D

I would say there are a few good personalities now, but I don't watch a lot of late night TV except on TCM. Most of it is just an advertisement for a movie anyway. I saw Aubrey Plaza on one of the shows as I was flipping the channel once, I don't even remember which show, and she was really funny, very deadpan. That was maybe a couple of years ago, and I haven't really seen any of the talk shows since.

Boy, am I out of the contemporary entertainment loop. Never heard of Aubrey Plaza. I think I'm really going to be lost once stars from my generation start to die off.

That aside, I'm thankful we have clips and memories.

BTW: Check out the clips of Dean Martin Roasts on YouTube. Some of those old classics are hysterical!

Sad what those later turned into. Smut-filled and disgusting with recipients not deserving of cold cuts, let alone a roast. Dino must have turned over in his grave.

I remember those! They were funny early on, but later, yecch.

I like how George Burns was able to inject a little blue humor on Johnny's show without it being at all obvious. A kid could watch that and never even know that joke about the cigar holder was in any way sexual. Maybe this was the magic of the time we all love, the classic period - getting away with things in a less than overt way is charming. Being rude for rudeness' sake is just clumsy.
