It's dangerous to show how beautifully designed the interstitial material was in the early days of TCM - people might see how relatively bland everything is today by comparison (and intentionally so because of some marketing idea).

I'm hoping the festival has some of these "retro" interstitials to show before screenings. Their recent ones kind of have the same vibe as the network bumpers (modern, bland).

Here is the schedule for the first month of Lone Star Cinema - initially it was on Saturdays at 3 pm:

1996-04-06 03:00 PM Wagon Master (1950) (a TCM premiere)
1996-04-13 03:00 PM Oh, Susanna! (1936) (a TCM premiere)
1996-04-20 03:00 PM Top Gun (1955)
1996-04-27 03:00 PM Young Bill Hickok (1940) (a TCM premiere)

It moved to 11 am in May of 1998 and then moved to noon in April of 2001, so the promo must be from 2001 or later.

Yeah, I just watched “A Beautiful Friendship” and was very saddened by how creative & beautiful the station started out & how ordinarily bland it has become. It really hits home seeing the imaginative, clever interstitials we used to see DAILY like the “big band” zippering behind the dolly.

Granted, many of the golden age stars are now gone but shouldn’t the homage go on?
I enjoyed seeing Billie Lourd talking about her Mom/Grandmother.

One of those early TCM executives didn't mind being transparent as to why Ben Mankiewicz was brought in as a counterpart to Osborne, aside from the fact he is Hollywood "royalty" -- I quote almost verbatim: "We liked your snarkiness and irreverence because as we all know Robert was a very serious guy".

"Robert was a very serious guy"

Translation: "Robert was essentially a fuddy-duddy from another generation so we brought you in to appeal to a younger audience. We also became woke for the same reason"

Ironic, because the channel seems more "square" than ever before thanks to its gauche attempts at hipness.

I miss Robert and the old-school approach.
