Documentary on George Brent and Arthur Shields

Post by moira finnie »

In light of the upcoming St. Patrick's Day celebration, it seems fitting that one of our former guest authors, Scott O'Brien, has been interviewed for a documentary in Gaelic (with Eng. Subtitles) called "Reabhloidithe Hollywood" (2014) aka "Hollywood Rebels." Scott is finishing his upcoming bio of George Brent, and provides some commentary on the actor in the movie. Please come back when you're ready to chat about your new book, Scott!

The filmmaker Brian Reddin, who made the documentary, describes his work as telling "the extraordinary story of how two Irish rebels became Hollywood stars. George Brent was a debonair leading man and Arthur Shields a reliable character actor. However, becoming Hollywood actors wasn’t the only thing these men had in common. They shared a love of Ireland and freedom, which lead them to join the fight for Irish Independence."
Here's a link below to the film, which has been posted on Vimeo and Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh! (St. Patrick’s Day Blessing On You): http://vimeo.com/83671325

Here are links to past conversations with Scott about his books on such topics as Kay Francis, Ann Harding and Ruth Chatterton here on the SSO:

Moira

I think of Arthur Shields as an actor who often potrayed spirtual leaders, both good and bad in many films.

In Drums Of The Mohawk he would shame folk from the pulpit, but redeemed himself by killing one of his flock, to save him from torture from the Indian's

He was the bigoted Deacon Mr. Parry in How Green Was My Valley and the kindly vicar Mr. Cyril Playfair in The Quite Man. He played a Minister in 2 westerns Apache Drums and in what was basically a cameo in The River Of No Return

I glanced at the title of this thread, and for just a second, I thought, "George Brett? The baseball player?" Focus!
