George Raft's Record Collection

Post by Joe Macclesfield »

I recall that some years ago I read (can't remember where) that George Raft had a record collection. I think Bogart was a jazz/swing fan (me too), but have often wondered what Raft's taste in music ran to. I know George used Sweet Georgia Brown as a signature tune. Wouldn't it be nice if, somehow, we could browse that record collection!
"...Then as a bee, which among weeds doth fall,
Which seem sweet floures with lustre fresh and gay,
She lights on that, and this, and tasteth all,
But pleasd with none doth rise and sore away..."

Dolores Fuller (who dated George Raft in the 50s and wrote the Afterword to my Raft bio) did tell me that he did have a large "eclectic" record collection and a state-of-the-art high-fidelity system. Also a hardwood floor that he used for dancing to his recordings.
