Re: The Major and The Minor
Wilder wasn't quite that inexperienced, Nitrate. In addition to the dozens of scripts he had written, he co-directed (whatever that means) a film in Paris in '34. Called Mauvaise Graine (Bad Seed), it is about young car thieves in Paris, and the female lead is Danielle Darrieux who must have been about seventeen at the time and was not yet as "cool" as she was during her prime. An enjoyable movie with lots of location street scenes and young people, very nouvelle vague. I can't remember where I saw it, but I have a feeling it was TCM, part of a Wilder series.

All I have to say is, "Champagne for everybody!'"
If anyone wants to know, I chose "Sue Sue" for my username because it is written as "Su-Su" in the film, and I didn't want to infringe on any copyright for the character's name. I adored this movie the first time I saw it! It's obvious that everyone on the set was enjoying making the movie because it is so effervescent.

I studied this at length and could not help wondering “ Is Sue-Sue having a go at me because I spelt the name as Susu”. I checked my source and found that Ginger did in fact spell the name Susu. I also found---
TCM spelt the name Su-su
Rotten Tomatoes and New York Times spelt it Sue-Sue
Saturday Evening Post spelt it Susu
Not coming .com Spelt it Su-Su
I also found that the story is based on a 1921 Saturday Evening Post story called “Sunny Goes Home” which in 1923 was made into a play by Edward Childs Carpenter called “Connie Goes Home”, which was presented on Broadway and lasted twenty performances.
Regardless how it is spelt, or where capital letters and hyphens are placed, one thing does stand out (our) Sue-Sue Applegate has good taste.
In America there are a few words which are spelt differently than they are in Australia. In writing this I found "spelt" in America is "spelled". I think I will have to associate more with young people to learn our changing language. For instance, zed is now zee, tins have become cans, white pointers are now great whites,
actresses are now actors. The mind boggles.

Yes. There are so many changes in language, technology, and communications that I struggle to keep up on a daily basis.
I believe the screen credits on my DVD spell it as "Su-Su." Thanks, Fossy!

Re: The Major and The Minor
White pointer is a shark. In Australia it was called white pointer because of the white point on it`s dorsal fin. It is a large shark, growing to 18 or 20 feet. A monster 28 foot white pointer --great white was featured in the 1975 movie "Jaws".CarrieLiz wrote:"A 'smackaroo' is a dollar, pal."

Ah. I see. Being none too fond of fish ( be they big or little, in the water or on a plate...or the screen ) I simply don't know the names of the species. I thought perhaps a 'white pointer' was a breed of large hunting dog...
Thanks for answering a silly question!

Yes it is, Wendy! Lovely Anita. ( I hope she isn't too much of a scene-stealer, though, in color. )
Re: The Major and The Minor
Even in the states, SPELT is perfectly acceptable. Maybe even preferred. Some people actually say DREAMT when describing night time brain activity. I say DREAMED, even though that's incorrect. Almost nobody uses WHO instead of THAT anymore. "The Cubs need a pitcher THAT can last more than three innings." No. "The Cubs need a pitcher WHO..." Of course, if you're a Cub fan, you'll take either one!

Who told you "dreamed" is incorrect? Or, if you prefer, you were told by whom that "dreamed" is incorrect?I say DREAMED, even though that's incorrect.
Not that it really matters. I'm a "dreamt" kinda guy.
Well, now, that depends. Are you referring to the person on the baseball mound who is supposed to throw the ball in the vicinity of home plate, or a container designed to hold a liquid from which said liquid may be easily poured (as in "The Cubs need a pitcher, not a glass of water.")?"The Cubs need a pitcher THAT can last more than three innings." No. "The Cubs need a pitcher WHO..."
