Hey Neighbors!
It's Labor Day Weekend, and whereas for other families across this Fair Land, that might mean a day or two at the Lake or the Beach or the Ballpark, and likely a barbecue or a picnic or a reunion somewhere, here at Chateau Klondike it means housecleaning, top to bottom :x , aggravated this year by the necessity of wrapping up our week-long task of moving our business office from the second-storey rental down on the village square (where we'd been for 7 years) four blocks up the hill to our house (same street, different end). Although we average 20 employees or so, we've managed to streamline our company's business so that the physical office location needs be open only for one afternoon per week.
Tight fit that it may make for us at Valentine House, the move will save us over a thousand dollars in rent, lights & insurance every month, and we just could not justify continuing to pass-up those savings.
Anyway, as often happens during such efforts, my film library unit needed moving, and I've learnt the hard way never to attempt doing so with it "loaded".
This time, being in a particular hurry, I literally tossed all those DVD's & VHS's onto the sofa handful by willy-nilly handful; and being still in a bull-nosed hurry after the cleaning and relocation, I scooped up those chaotically spilt & intermingled films with the same disdain for order or even format, jamming them back in all helter-skelter, working from both ends in clutches of 2 - 5 movies at a time.
And taking a moment to catch my pentagenarian breath, and crack a fresh Dr. P, I noticed a delightful occurence - my films had grouped themselves into their own hurly-burly neighborhoods, like separate, tiny trade unions, of sorts, and crafty little fraternal lodges, so to speak, disregarding all former groupings of genre or alphabet or format.
How about your shelves? They ever get all star-crost and go walkabout?
Choosing just one of my four ninety-inch shelves, here's what my "uncorrected" cinema demography looks like now:

The Seven Samurai, Boy on a Dolphin, The Devil & Daniel Webster, The Corn is Green
The Beast from Hollow Mountain, Mrs. Brown, Walk on the Wild Side, Bad Day at Black Rock
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, His Girl Friday, The Queen, Sullivan's Travels

I've never tried to alphabetize my stuff. It would certainly help, but I've got better things to do. What I have done is put all my recorded stuff into folders and label them by decade. That way, if I'm looking for something, I can usually find it reasonably quickly, although I might have to look through three folders of 30's films to do so.

I'm going to add my store-bought discs to the equation sooner or later, just to save space and keep everything under my thumb. I'll probably paper a room with the cover inserts! :P

I maintain my DVDs and VHS cassettes in alphabetical order -- by Director.

The store-bought DVDs and all cassettes are on shelves, starting with Tengiz Abuladze: REPENTANCE (1987), and ending with Fred Zinnemann: THE MEN (1950). The non-store-bought DVDs are in sheets maintained in an ever-growing number of three ring binders, starting with Robert Aldrich: VERA CRUZ (1954), and ending with Fred Zinnemann: A HATFUL OF RAIN (1957). And the films by each Director are kept in chronological order.

Of course, decisions (which are final and not subject to review) must be made; for example, JOURNEY INTO FEAR and HE WALKED BY NIGHT. Easy: With the real Directors, Welles and Mann, respectively. Or, multiple disc sets with multiple directors? Kept together in the back row of one shelf.

Yes, that's how I also store my 78s, 45s, LPs & CDs -- alphabetical by artist, in chronological order, with divisions for Rock'n'Roll, Jazz and Classical. Think Daniel Stern in DINER.

Random surprise groupings, Klondike? Never, no, never. My heart can't stand the shock.
Everyday people...that's what's wrong with the world. -- Morgan Morgan
I love movies. But don't get me wrong. I hate Hollywood. -- Orson Welles
Movies can only go forward in spite of the motion picture industry. -- Orson Welles

By director? I would only find a few things. Alphabetical by title for me.

My 90" of Celestial Chaos isn't really chaos at all. In fact I have everything neatly organized alphabetically in my den's closet.

It took quite a while to organize since my wife and I just moved again last October from Norfolk, Virginia to our present home here in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In Virginia, all of my movies were stored in various plastic containers. I think it took me about two weekends in a row to get all of these tapes / dvds organized again.

I am not sure if you want a complete listing of my movies or not but here goes:

A listing of my VHS and DVD titles in alphabetical order on my wood shelves in my den. The (T) represents taped movies on VHS. I also have numerous tv mini series, comedy specals, etc listed at the end of this list. A total of 592 titles, (570 movies).

I've pondered the notion of starting a professional counseling service on DVD and media collecting. Surprisingly, the Cost Of Shelving is almost never addressed, and certainly the storage-unit for individual DVD-Rs is hardly addressed at first. Both, however, become increasingly worthy of consideration as collections grow, and that IS what collections tend to do. I've relied on alphabetizing-on-shelves as our collection has gone from a few to, well, more than a few.

Klon, I've got to admit you've got some interesteing pairings, there.

Well, I finally dumped all my store bought DVD cases (keeping the inserts & Criterion essays) and have placed my commercial films in folders along with my broadcast recorded movies.

What a difference. Where my collection was running out of control, thousands of films can now sit in in a single bookcase. Finding stuff is also a lot easier now, as the shelves and folders are coded by decades (I'm not at the point where I need folders for individual years--yet) and transport is easier as well.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased at how this turned out and would definitely recommend it to anyone needing space or simply wanting to have things neater and more at their fingertips.

This thread and everyone's comments has certainly given me food for thought. I have to do something with all these DVD's and VHS tapes! I am thinking a decade by decade route here....

Since I concentrate on Female Singing Leads I organize by performer. All of my Jeanette MacDonalds are together as well as Deanna Durbin or Grace Moore or Jane Powell or Kathryn Grayson. When I am in the mood for one or the other performer I go right to that section.
