Hi,

Great thread, Nancy! All those one liners and all those memories.....

Gloria Swanson: "All those people out there, sitting in the dark"...

Mary Astor: "I have no more time for you, not even one more minute"...

Mary Boland &
Agnes Moorehead: "L'amour, l'amour; oh how it can lift you up and oh how it can let you down"....

Paulette Goddard &
Ann Miller: "Where I spit, no grass grows ever"....

Florence Bates: "My dear, have you been doing something you oughtn't?"...

From the pen and mouth of one of my favorite humorists:

The country makes me nervous. There’s crickets and it’s quiet… there’s no place to walk after dinner… there’s screens with the dead moths behind them… you’ve got the Manson family possibly, you got Dick and Perry…. - Alvy Singer

Don't you see the rest of the country looks upon New York like we're left-wing, communist, Jewish, homosexual pornographers? I think of us that way sometimes and I live here. - Alvy Singer

A relationship, I think, is like a shark. You know? It has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark. - Alvy Singer

I love the rain - it washes memories off the sidewalk of life. - Allan

No, my parents never got divorced, although I begged them to. - Allan

I'll get broads up here like you wouldn't believe: swingers, freaks, nymphomaniacs, dental hygienists. - Allan

I haven't seen my analyst in 200 years. He was a strict Freudian. If I'd been going all this time, I'd probably almost be cured by now. - Miles Monroe

I'm what you would call a teleological, existential atheist. I believe that there's an intelligence to the universe, with the exception of certain parts of New Jersey. - Miles Monroe

This stuff tastes awful. I could make a fortune selling it in my health food store. - Miles Monroe

Favorite quotes from the LOVE GODDESS herself ...

“I always considered myself as a comedienne who could dance.”

“Sensitive, shy–of course I was. The fun of acting is to become someone else.”

“All I wanted was just what everybody else wants, you know, to be loved.”

She speaks from the HEART when she said this below ...

“Whatever you write about me, don’t make it sad.”

Thanks, Red.

I have to confess...gulp...I dislike Woody Allen intensely, and never view his movies. I know there are some really funny lines to be heard, but the man just totally creeps me out. (Will now go to the corner of the room and sit, facing wall).

Hi,

This always makes me chuckle every time I hear it - repeatedly on TCM -

Myrna Loy: "What's that man doing in my drawers?!!!"

Dear Knitty,

My nine movie quotes preceding Red's: First three from ANNIE HALL, the next three from PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM, and the last three from SLEEPER. All written and spoken by Woody Allen. Now I feel really old: 50 directing credits in just under a 50 year directing career.

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. (Yul Brynner, “The King and I”)
I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it and stick your head out and yell, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it any more! (Peter Finch, “Network”)
Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me. Aren’t you? (Dustin Hoffman, “The Graduate”)
If I kept my hair “natural” the way you do, I’d be bald! (Rosalind Russell, “Auntie Mame”)
Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn! and Tara! Home! I’ll go home, and I’ll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day. (Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, “Gone with the Wind”)

By the way, I left out the quote we’d most like to forget:
