Favorite Escape Movie Poll

Post by ChiO »

You cannot escape your destiny. – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Many of us watch movies as a form of escape. And, with the onset of Winter (except for feaito), escape may be foremost on our minds. Therefore, ergo and hence: It’s a Poll to name the SSO Favorite Escape Movie.

“Escape” from any form of custody: prison, jail, POW camp, etc. “Escape” that is successful, attempted, or plotted. “Escape” that is the focus of the movie, or merely a catalyst for the narrative. It’s wide open.

Check your reference books. Search the SSO threads and other online resources. And please submit your list of your favorite 15 Escape movies by end of the day (that’s 11:59pm + 59 seconds CST) Monday, November 25th.

The rules will remain the same as those in most of the previous polls. You can list your choices in order of preference or leave them unnumbered. If you list them in order, a film receiving a #1 ranking carries more weight (15 points) than a film carrying a #15 ranking (1 point) when tabulating the results for the pairings. If you choose not to number your choices, they will all be assigned a value of 7.5 points. Please make clear whether you are (or are not) ranking your choices.

After the scoring for all the submissions have been counted, we will cut the field down to the top 32 choices to begin our head-to-head competitions (the #1 movie will go up against the #32 movie, the #2 movie will go up against the #31 movie, etc.). The match-ups continue until only one movie is left unreeling. We will crown it the SSO Favorite Escape Movie of 2013.

Your submissions can be made on this thread starting now, and you have the option to go back and alter, amend or otherwise destroy your list right up to the last second on November 25th. Please share your opinions on some of your nominees that not everybody may be too familiar with.

We encourage all newer members that have not participated in these polls before to get involved. It's all for fun, and it can be very educational. We have previously run polls for the best overall film ever (To Kill a Mockingbird) and we have done the Bestavorite Western (The Searchers), Film Noir (tie: Touch of Evil and Out of the Past), non-comedy Silent (tie: Sunrise and The Crowd), Favorite Musical (Singin’ in the Rain), Favorite Shakespeare Adaptation (Chimes at Midnight) and others.

In case of ties, run-offs will be conducted. In case of unforeseen Bizarro World events, the ever-able Associate Justice Knitty (not to be confused with Frank Nitti) and I will make up (in a strictly non-arbitrary fashion) the rules as we go along.

Voice your choice! Cast you votes for your favorite 15 Escape Movies now!

Have I been elected assigned bushwhacked asked to serve again? I'm still waiting on my last check....
Oh well, I'm in!

Stalag 17
The Captive Heart (I can hear those groans)
The Great Escape (natch)
the Gay divorcee (hey, escape from marriage counts!)
The Rock

I'm sure there are lots more, after seeing some of the soon to be posted lists, I will amend mine.

This is going to be a fun one!!!

"Escape" is what you decide "escape" is.

Would have never thought of Spirited Away, Chicken Run or Mysterious Island. That's what these Polls are all about.

Thanks.

this sounds fun! but i'm going to have to put on my thinking hat!

Masha, that movie about the toy sounds like one I'd love----and probably start sobbing over. NOTHING could separate me from my stuffed animals when I was little. Of course, I've outgrown such nonsense by now.

It's late and the only one I can think of just now is Spencer Tracy's tortured passage through The Seventh Cross to escape the Nazis. I breathed a sigh of relief at the end.

Great idea for a thread, ChiO. The first movie that sprang to mind was also yours, hope you don't mind, but Bresson makes the quietest and most compelling films, doesn't he? Here are my choices in no particular order:

A Man Escaped (1956)
The Count of Monte Cristo (1934)
The Roaring Twenties (1939): Because escape sometimes arrives dressed as death
Escape (1940)
Peter Ibbetson (1935)
Dust Be My Destiny (1939)
The Secret Garden (1949)
Les Misérables (1935)
The 39 Steps (1935)
Fury! (1936)
Pépé le Moko (1937)
49th Parallel (1941)
Houdini (1953)
Stalag 17 (1953)
The Colditz Story (1955)
Two Women (1960)
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Avatar: Frank McHugh (1898-1981)

The Skeins

The Defiant Ones - 1958
Colorado Territory - 1949
A Night To Remember - 1958 (or pick your own Titanic movie)
Runaway Train - 1985
Chicken Run. (If you're going to do "The Great Escape" I guess this one needs to be included too.)
North By Northwest - 1959
