UPDATE FROM TURNER.COM:

TCM to Honor Academy Award® Winning Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola With Hand and Footprint Ceremony At TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX® in Hollywood
Celebration to Take Place April 29 During the 2016 TCM Classic Film Festival

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will honor acclaimed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola during a handprint-footprint ceremony at the world-famous TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX® on Friday, April 29, 2016 as part of the 2016 TCM Classic Film Festival. Coppola has been a Hollywood icon for more than 50 years having directed such classics as The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now (1979), The Conversation (1974) among countless other classics and is an Oscar®, Golden Globe® and BAFTA® award winner. Renowned for his generosity with other filmmakers, Coppola has served as a fierce promoter and mentor to others, championing the work of directors George Lucas, John Milius and Sofia Coppola and actors Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Harrison Ford, James Caan and Diane Lane.

“Without a doubt, Francis Ford Coppola is one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation," said TCM host Robert Osborne. “His Academy Award®-winning directing, producing and writing contributions have given audiences some of the most memorable films of the last half-century, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate his distinguished career, and our appreciation of what he's added to our lives, than with this honor.”

This marks the sixth consecutive year TCM has featured a hand and footprint ceremony at the legendary TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX®. In 2011, Peter O'Toole was the honoree, followed by Kim Novak in 2012, Jane Fonda in 2013, Jerry Lewis in 2014 and Christopher Plummer in 2015.

1974's "The Conversation" has also been added to the films section of the website...

It's Coppola's personal favorite!

Suzanne Lloyd, granddaughter of Harold Lloyd, will be present at the poolside screening of "The Freshman" during festival events this year.
Image
Suzanne Lloyd is always willing to discuss her grandfather's legacy with credentialied media and fans, and here is Lloyd on the TCMFF Red Carpet at the 2014 festival. She also appeared for the screening of "Why Worry?" (1923), whose world premiere score composed by Carl Davis was also a part of the festivities.

From the TCM Film Festival 2014 website biography of Suzanne Lloyd:

"From her earliest childhood, Suzanne Lloyd lived at the Harold Lloyd estate, Greenacres (a National Registry of Historic Monuments) with her mother, Gloria, and grandparents Harold and Mildred Lloyd. Harold Lloyd was a popular silent film star. He produced and starred in over 200 films in his 30-year career. Harold recognized Suzanne’s aptitude for business and left specific provisions in his will that she would be the family representative working on all matters related to his films, his image and his legacy. He died in 1971 leaving his 19 year-old granddaughter as a trustee to his film library.

The Harold Lloyd library is the largest film library privately held. It is a daunting project for any individual to undertake without studio support. The films, many of them 80 years old were in desperate need of restoration. The original nitrate negatives needed to be digitized to tape to preserve them for a new generation. New scores were also needed as the majority of the films in the library are silent. With the help of UCLA and philanthropist, David Packard, Sue began the arduous task of restoring the classic films. Suzanne has devoted herself to film preservation and sits on the board of the American Film Institute.

In 2002, Turner Classic Movies stepped forward and offered to show thirty Harold Lloyd movies on their cable channel. The films debuted in April, 2003 on TCM – Harold Lloyd Month. Suzanne appeared on camera with host, Robert Osborne, to discuss the films and her famous grandfather.

In the last few years, Suzanne Lloyd has contracted over 100 film festivals throughout the United States including: the Film Forum in New York, Lincoln Center, Telluride, Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival and sell-out crowds in 2000 seat theatres in Chicago, San Francisco and San Diego. The Lloyd films have been shown in film festivals in Scotland, Holland, Belgium and beyond. Suzanne has been a guest speaker in Italy’s Pordenone Film Festival and the UK’s British Film Institute.

Suzanne was the executive producer of the British documentary, Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius (1992), written and directed by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill. The film was nominated for an EMMY award and ran on PBS under the banner of the Academy Masters Series. The film was licensed to over thirty countries through Britain’s Thames Television International.

The Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences kicked off its 70th year anniversary with a screening of Speedy (1928), recently restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archives. An exhibit of Harold Lloyd’s Rogues’ Gallery, a private collection of over 200 autographed photographs of stars, famous personalities, politicians, and athletes from the ’20s and ’30s accompanied the event.

Suzanne continues to protect and market the work, image and legacy of Harold Lloyd. Other accomplishments include a unique book, 3-D Hollywood (Simon and Schuster) featuring award-winning photography from the camera of Harold Lloyd. In 2002, Suzanne toured the country appearing on TV and radio shows to promote her new book about her famous grandfather, Harold Lloyd Master Comedian, (Abrams).

In October 2004, Black Dog & Leventhal released Harold Lloyd’s Hollywood Nudes in 3D.
Suzanne has archived over 3000 stills from the film library. The nitrate negatives are housed at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The images are licensed with both Getty Images and Corbis Motion.

Suzanne also produced DVDs of her grandfather’s films with New Line Home Entertainment – The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection. In addition, Suzanne is currently developing a remake of “Safety Last!” with producer, Mark Gordon.

During the 1920’s Harold Lloyd was the most successful film star in the world. When he died, an important film library was bestowed upon his granddaughter. Suzanne Lloyd considers it an honor to preserve and promote Harold Lloyd’s legacy for future generations."

The opening night poolside screening at the Hollywood Roosevelt of master comedian Harold Lloyd’s biggest hit, The Freshman (1925), featuring DJ Thomas Golubić spinning a unique live music mix for the silent film, will include an appearance by Suzanne Lloyd.

Sue Sue's Annual Fest Wish List......

Post by Sue Sue Applegate »

Speculation T. Cornpone: It's almost our last chance to dream about screenings for the TCMFF 2016. Passes have been arriving in the mail for a few days, and anxious passholders keep hoping for more updates. I also cannot wait to read about all the panels and interviews scheduled for Club TCM.
We might see interviews with Francis Ford Coppola, Gina Lollobrigida, Carl Reiner, Elliot Gould, and many more special guests who have yet to be announced.

Burt Reynolds will be the subject for the celebrity interview at the Montalban Theatre, which will be screened later on TCM.

Here are some collected comments from friends who still have a 'fest wish list' before the final schedule magically appears on the TCM Film Festival 2016 website:

Joanne Woodward introducing any of her films like "The Long, Hot Summer," "The Three Faces of Eve," or "From The Terrace."
(Woodward has reportedly been ill, but we would all love to see her.)

Mamie Van Doren, "Teacher's Pet."

Ellyn Burstyn, and/or Jeff Bridges and/or Cybill Shepherd and/or Timothy Bottoms and/or Cloris Leachman, "The Last Picture Show."

Natasha Gregson Wagner introducing "Gypsy" or any of her mother's, Natalie Woods,' wonderful films.

Sissy Spacek and/or Tommy Lee Jones, "Coal Miner's Daughter"

Dina Merrill, "Butterfield 8" or maybe "The Sundowners." (She would be 93.)

Diane Baker, "The Best of Everything."

Sue Lyon, "Night of the Iguana."

Stephanie Powers introducing William Holden's "Dear Ruth."

Doris Day introducing any of her films.( She would be 94.)

Clint Eastwood and "Hang 'em High."

Burt Reynolds and Candace Bergen, "Starting Over."

John Ford's early silent, "Fig Leaves."

Ingrid Bergman's daughters (Ingrid, Pia, Isabella) introducing the documentary "Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words."

Christa Fuller introducing Sam Fuller's "Pickup on South Street," or the recent Fuller documentary.

Rita Moreno and "The King and I."

Ben Mankiewicz introducing "A Letter to Three Wives."

Illeana Douglas introducing more of her grandfather's fabulous films. (The wonderful Melvyn Douglas!)

It would also be fun if Alan Arkin returned to join the introduction of "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming."

And my annual request, Joan Collins and "The Opposite Sex." (It was screened in October with Collins and Robert Osborne discussing Collins' career and experiences. Thank you, Mr. Tabesh, it was ten times of fabulous.)

Image
Of course most pass holders I've spoken with or connected with on social media want Sylvester Stallone and/or Burt Young and/or Talia Shire to introduce "Rocky," and Robert Redford and/or Dustin Hoffman and/or Jane Alexander and/or Bob Woodward and/or Carl Bernstein to introduce "All The President's Men." The stage would be packed, and I'm sure the theater would be!

What do you want to see this year?

I am thrilled that Angela Lansbury will be joining us again! Since we had an update today, I assume we should see a full schedule next week. I'm ecstatic with what we've found out today! :-)

Lansbury's first appearance at the festival was for an introduction to "Gaslight" a few years ago, and since her visit to the TCMFF, she's appeared in a touring stage production of "Driving Miss Daisy."

The fact that Carl Bernstein will be joining us, as well as recent Oscar-winning Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer of "Spotlight" fame. And I know so many will be thrilled that Billy Dee Williams will be in attendance for the iconic "Brian's Song!"

Here's an excerpt from the update:

"From the latest email update: Turner Classic Movies (TCM) continues to add screen icons and intriguing panels to its star-studded festival lineup during the 7th Annual 2016 TCM Classic Film Festival, set to take place April 28 – May 1 in Hollywood.

Beloved Oscar® and Golden Globe® winner Angela Lansbury joins the festival with a screening and conversation of The Manchurian Candidate (1962), the combination satire and political thriller. Oscar winning actress and singer Rita Moreno will introduce a 60th anniversary screening of the cherished musical The King and I (1956).

Emmy nominee Billy Dee Williams will present a screening of Brian’s Song (1971), the true story of friendship between Chicago Bears’ player Gale Sayers (Williams) and Brian Piccolo (James Caan).
 Investigative journalist Carl Bernstein, Oscar winning director/ screenwriter Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), along with Oscar Winning screenwriter Josh Singer (Spotlight), join the festivities for opening night’s 40th Anniversary screening of the political thriller All The President’s Men (1976).

Club TCM, the central gathering point for festival passholders located in the lobby of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, will feature a remarkable slate that includes:

 “Man’s Best Friend: Dogs in Film.” Movie icons are stars that evoke an immediate emotional response, and Rin Tin Tin, Lassie, Old Yeller, Benji and Beethoven are right up there with the best of the two-legged variety. Join Randy Haberkamp of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as he shares stills and clips from the Academy’s collections of dogs in movie history, and then interviews three of Canine Cinema’s biggest stars during a rare public appearance. Meet Clyde of Marley & Me (2008), Brigitte, the original Stella from Modern Family and the latest Lassie.

 “From Headlines to Ticket Lines” a panel discussion with director James Vanderbilt (Truth), Oscar winning writer Josh Singer (Spotlight), broadcast news producer and author Mary Mapes and print journalist/editor Ben Bradlee, Jr. about the challenges of dramatizing the work of journalists for the screen."

And TCM's. darned Charlie Tabesh posted another empty schedule grid on social media.
TEASE!!!!! :D :( :D :( :D
