IT'S JANE....

2013 TCM Classic Film Festival to Honor Jane Fonda!
Image

The 2013 TCM Classic Film Festival will honor two-time Academy Award®-winning actress Jane Fonda with a multi- tiered celebration of her remarkable film career. Fonda will take part in two events during the festival, beginning with a public ceremony where she will have her hand and footprints enshrined in concrete in front of TCL Chinese Theatre. And in what is certain to be a highlight of the festival, she will help introduce a screening of On Golden Pond, the touching drama from 1981 that provided her the chance to work with her legendary father, Henry Fonda, for the first and only time. The TCM Classic Film Festival will take place Thursday, April 25 – Sunday, April 28, in Hollywood.

"We couldn't be happier to be able to salute Jane Fonda at the TCM Classic Film Festival," said TCM host Robert Osborne. "She's an extraordinary actress and a truly fascinating woman, and despite her two Academy Awards, too little has been said and written about her work as an actress and all those amazing, top-tier films she's made. Having Jane in person at the festival will also give film fans the rare opportunity to hear directly from the lady herself about her career, including her work with her father on the film On Golden Pond and how the father- daughter relationship they portrayed on screen in many ways paralleled their own complicated relationship."

Fonda's hand and footprints ceremony will take place Saturday, April 27, in front of TCL Chinese Theatre. Plans call for the cement section featuring her imprints to be placed next to her father's spot in the theatre's famous courtyard. This marks the third consecutive year TCM has featured a hand and footprint ceremony at TCL Chinese Theatre. In 2011, Peter O'Toole was the honoree, followed in 2012 by Kim Novak.

After Fonda's hand and footprints are enshrined, she will help introduce a screening of On Golden Pond. Directed by Mark Rydell and based on a play by Ernest Thompson, On Golden Pond stars Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn as Norman and Ethel Thayer, an elderly couple facing their twilight years as they spend a summer at their lake cabin. Jane Fonda plays their daughter, Chelsea, who is struggling to find common ground with her father after years of turbulence. Also starring are Dabney Coleman as Fonda's fiancé and Doug McKeon as her future stepson.

So one of the big questions that Lynn posed to me concerns who will be the object of the Robert Osborne interview?
The first year, it was 100-year-old Luise Rainer, who braved the volcanic storm cloud to fly across the pond.
The last two years it was the recipient of the footprint ceremony at Grauman's (It wasn't called the TCL Chinese Theatre THEN!) Both Peter O'Toole and Kim Novak have had the privilege of the full interview treatment.

So the big question is if Robert Osborne will choose Jane Fonda, and update his Private Screenings interview he had with her several years ago, or if Barbra shows up for the Funny Girl premiere, will she be the chosen one? Hmnnnn.....

Barbara Streisand, star of the upcoming TCMFF 2013 Gala Premiere film of Funny Girl, is appearing at this year's 85th Academy Awards ceremonies: http://www.oscars.org/

This is the first time she has performed during an Oscar's telecast in 36 years:
http://www.app.com/viewart/20130130/NJE ... ing-Oscars

And she is also scheduled to be the recipient of the Film Society of Lincoln Center's 40th Annual Chaplin Award: http://www.barbrastreisand.com/us/home

Seems she plans on stepping out this spring. Might that include a walk down the red carpet on April 25th for the 45th anniversary of Funny Girl's release and the new Sony Pictures Colorworks Restoration?

TCM to Celebrate Career of Actress Kim Novak on March 6 with Interview Special and Four Films
TCM's Robert Osborne Hosts Kim Novak: Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival, Hour-Long Interview Special Taped Last April in Hollywood
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will celebrate the extraordinary career of actress Kim Novak with an entire night of programming Wednesday, March 6, beginning at 8 p.m. (ET). The evening will open with the premiere of Kim Novak: Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival, a one-hour interview special hosted by TCM's Robert Osborne and taped at last year's festival in Hollywood.

In addition to Kim Novak: Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival, TCM will explore Novak's career with presentations of four memorable films: Bell, Book and Candle (1958), Picnic (1955), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Of Human Bondage (1964).

"Kim Novak had one of the really interesting careers in the movie business," Osborne says in his introduction to Kim Novak: Live from the TCM Classic Film Festival. "Her rise in Hollywood in the 1950s was meteoric. She went from being a fledgling model to a full-blown superstar in the space of just two short years. By 1956, she was considered the movie's #1 box office star in the world."

Novak was a reluctant superstar, however, as Osborne goes on to explain. "She turned her back on fame and eventually left Hollywood for a quiet life in the Pacific Northwest, where she ultimately found what she'd always been after: contentment."

Last April, after more than two decades away from the spotlight, Novak accepted TCM's invitation to return to Hollywood as a special guest at the 2012 TCM Classic Film Festival. During that festival, she was honored with a hand and footprint ceremony at TCL Chinese Theatre, followed by her extensive interview with Osborne in front of a packed house at The Avalon theater.

"This was something all of us at TCM have wanted to happen for a long time, and it was well worth the wait," Osborne says about his conversation with Novak. "Kim was candid, revealing, funny, heartbreakingly honest and beautiful. The end result is one of my favorites of any interview I've ever had the good fortune to be a part of."

• The Seventh Seal (1957)

This intriguing character study stars Gene Hackman and Al Pacino and features exceptional cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond. Scarecrow, which has been newly restored by Warner Bros., earned the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
Airplane! (1980) – Featuring an appearance by writer-directors David Zucker, Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams

France Nuyen is probably best remembered as the character of Liat, Bloody Mary’s daughter, in South Pacific, directed by Josh Logan. Nuyen has more than 60 acting credits since her film debut in the screen adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific (1958), which was inspired by James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948, and was first adapted for the stage in 1949 and starred Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza.

Image
In 1986, Ms. Nuyen earned a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology in an obvious departure from her screen career. During the next passage of her professional journey, she counsels abused and battered women and children, and women in prison, and received a Woman of the Year award in LA in 1989 for work as a clinical psychologist.

Image
In the October issues of Life in 1958, Nuyen was quoted as saying, “ I am Chinese…I am a stone. I go where I am kicked.” In reality, Nuyen was repeating a line one of her characters makes in an episode of the television series I Spy, and Robert Culp, one of the stars of the show, became Nuyen’s second husband, until 1970. Of Vietnamese-French ancestry and born in France, near Marseille, Bouches du Rhone, Nuyen has a daughter who lives in Canada.

Even though the 50th Anniversary celebration of South Pacific did not include Nuyen, obviously TCM has made plans to correct that oversight. Her loveliness on screen provides John Kerr as Lt. Cable with purpose.

Also slated to introduce South Pacific is Mitzi Gaynor, as the perky Nellie Forbush, still traveling the country in her one woman show, Mitzi…Razzle Dazzle. My Life Behind the Sequins! More about her a little later...

I'll just bet it is the poolside screening!!!

I saw the latest FF promo this morning and South Pacific is, indeed, the poolside screening!

And the El Capitan will be hosting several films, not just one!
