Very true, Red, but Thompson had more talent than the average Hollywood player and he clearly had something to say at the beginning of his career. Sometimes I think that part of the problem with any career is that people only have so much they feel deeply about, but making a living may require going through the motions much of the time. A career in the arts seems to be even more demanding, and movies are the most expensive of them of all in terms of moolah, time, effort and the determination needed--not to mention talent.
