Bay of Angels ending

Post by LostHorizons »

We can easily infer Jeanne Moreau left him immediately after using him for all of his money to gamble and then driving him to debt. I don’t even know if the director intended that to be a happy ending or an open ended ending where you realize she is going to screw him over for all his money. The sappy, sentimental music makes that lame ending hilarious. :D :smiley_oneglass:  Also the abrupt change of emotion after she gambles away her money and then runs after him. What a stupid movie. :D  :?

Bay of Angels is a film I'd been curious about for years. I like it better than Demy's Lola, not quite so much as the masterful Umbrellas of Cherbourg, although that one is hard to top. Moreau looks frankly unattractive through much of the movie, appropriately so as a middle-aged woman addicted to gambling. Claude Mann plays the rather inexperienced younger man who develops his own gambling addiction. SPOILERS: The "happy" ending doesn't strike me as happy at all. Demy, I think, sees the two as a romantic couple genuinely in love, but I see it as a young man condemning himself to gambling hell due to his infatuation with a worthless woman, even if she does look like Jeanne Moreau. Perhaps this is because I knew someone in a comparable situation; things did not end well.

And in the present day: I agree, LostHorizons, that Demy apparently sees this as a romantic ending. That makes no sense whatsoever, given what we have seen.
The mood change at the very end is so abrupt I actually wasn’t sure if it was part of a joke. One second, she is telling him to get bent while at the casino and then she just suddenly changed her mind and runs after him while the lamest and sappiest music ever composed by M. Legrand plays.

I have seen Umbrellas of Cherbourg which you mention and while I do not love it it is at least more tonally consistent than this film is.

This Demy movie actually brought to mind another gambling addiction movie- “The Only Game in Town” with Liz Taylor. It is so similar that I wonder if it was at least partially based on or influenced by this movie.

Now, what I could never figure out about the end of this flick is why Clark Gable never told Sidney Poitier that he was his biological father until at the very end of...

(...oh wait...what movie are we talkin' about here again???)

“Bag of angels” which is autocorrect-ese for “Bay of Angels”, a film with Jeanne Moreau as a middle aged woman with a gambling addiction who uses a naive young man as a lucky charm while gambling because he picks winning numbers. It is nowhere near as interesting as that description makes it sound and the ending is moronic.

Yeah, I actually ran across a short bit of it the other night while channel surfing.

The part where Moreau strips down to her corset while she and the kid are about to hop into bed together, but because I had missed what had come before this, I changed the channel and instead watched a PBS 'Nova' episode on why bridges collapse.

(...this here was just a case of me yet again being unable to resist goin' for a pun...on the title of this movie in this case...the other movie of course being 'BAND of Angels') ;)

I saw Donkey Skin last night and enjoyed it immensely. Donkey Skin should’ve been the main import not Bay of Angels.
