I admit I'm a big Alan Bates fan and I've never had chance to see the TV series but this generation is my parents generation and I know a few couples who weren't matched but made their way through for the sake of the children. Today it wouldn't happened, was it a more innocent age or did we take our responsibilites more seriously?
Both Alan Bates, June Ritchie and Thora Hird give brilliant performances. The young couple are selfish and repentant in turns. The story is told from Vic's point of view, with his angst being felt the most. The ending is open left to the viewers preference. I'm a romantic I think they find their way through.
I do like all the films of the genre and all the ones you've mentioned, Stuart. It's a good subject
