Spotlight on Nightclubs...

Post by moira finnie »

"It's quarter to 3, there's no one in the place 'cept you & me..."

Well, not quite...Miss Goddess & I were having a bit of a discussion about nightclubs in movies and she gave me the idea that we should start a thread about them. I have to put on my favorite Howard Shoup gown, (you know, the cream colored one with one shoulder exposed with the bugle beads at the midriff and the mile long train that keeps catching in the door of those cabs), pile my hair on top of my head and think beautiful, tough gal thoughts like Ann Sheridan to take this imaginary journey into the heart of the celluloid city's nightlife...

I think my favorite stops on the nightclub trail might be the jungle themed club where Mighty Joe Young performs, the spot owned by tough guy Robert Alda in The Man I Love and Nora Prentiss, and, when I'm feeling like really getting down and dirty, that Road House that's a combination bowling alley and gin joint where Ida Lupino warbles, totally careless about luring unsuspecting men to their doom. I gotta go catch Jimmy Cagney and Gladys George's management techniques when they hold sway over their own prohibition era clip joint now...The Roaring Twenties is on TCM!!
Catch ya later..

Ah, but everyone comes to Rick's Cafe Americaine. Now if I could just find those 3 foot high shoulder pads, and the platform shoes, I'd be ready to go!

Ahhhh...there's nothing better than a lungful of nightclub ciggie smoke and the caress of a hundred pair of eyes.

"Goodness! What a beautiful gown!"

"Goodness had nothin' to do with it, honey."

Let's dance! No not proper like Bobby Montgomery who's only pretending anyway because he's all the time keeping an eye on Mrs Smith who's out with his partner...and she never wore that dress for HIM all the years they were married...No, hold me scandalously close like Clark Gable did Norma Shearer...

How about the Copa?

If I want to rumble in the jungle, give me that "Hot Voodoo" in BLONDE VENUS (I'll be the guy in the tux with a silk scarf and red carnation).

Otherwise, I'll be in my rumpled suit soaking up the gin listening to Al Roberts while preparing for my own DETOUR.

I've recently watched Ball Of Fire, I loved the nightclub scene, boy I'd love to visit one of these nightclubs.

Hot Voodoo from Blonde Venus, Falling in Love Again in Blue Angel and Marlene in her tux in Morocco. Marlene was made for nightclubs.

The rest I shall have to give more though to.

How about slumming a bit?
Image
I'd certainly like to drop by that road house run by "ready to crack" Lloyd Nolan with Howard Da Silva and Wally Ford running things behind the scenes in Blues in the Night, (which I've learned is finally being released on dvd on 7/22/08--oh, happy day!). Gotta catch those hep cats Richard Whorf, Jack Carson, (was Jack ever really hep?), Elia Kazan, and Billy Halop in full swing, chasing a dream, looking for the lost chord while the NYC skyline twinkles as an elusive sight in the distance in the night sky. But be careful. If you go and hear noises in the barn during a thunderstorm, you might get caught in the crossfire.
Image
Management and labor having a bit of a policy disagreement out in the barn...

Don't like the looks of that Whorf guy as he tickles the ivories, either...maybe he should switch to decaf...do you think it's safe to drink directly from the glasses they serve their watered-down hooch in here?
Image
For an even more exotic trip through the glamourous underbelly of the nightlife, how about spinning the wheel at the Chinese clip joint run by "Mother" Gin Sling (Ona Munson) in The Shanghai Gesture.
Image
We call her "Mom"...she's an old fashioned girl...

Maybe I can get Doctor Omar (Victor Mature) to be my escort...hmmm, what shall I wear? I think a glazed look goes with just about anything there, don't you?

Seedy or Swank, here are some more of my own favorite nightclub scenes in the movies:

SONG OF THE THIN MAN: Definitely "swank" --- it would have to be if Nick and Nora are there, but the nightclub which is the centerpiece of this last of the Charles' adventures also attracts a clientelle that have their pictures in the post office...or should.

YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN: This movie has the gamut of venues for the up and coming (and down and going) Kirk Douglas. In the best of them, Doris Day illuminates the room and the screen with her finest vocals and the best song material she ever got to work with on film.

And how about that wonderful, magical nightclub in Central Park that hosted Eddie Duchin (THE EDDIE DUCHIN STORY) when he wasn't working the Starlight Ball Room at the Waldorf? Sigh. If only Tavern-on-the-Green had even 10% as much class. If only Central Park did! :P

But my favorites are the glorious Van Nest Polglase designed concoctions with ceilings a hundred feet high, staircases of a hundred steps and dance floors the size of football fields in TOP HAT, SWING TIME, FOLLOW THE FLEET and SHALL WE DANCE?

For a peek at some clips of Nick and Nora out on the town, check out Coopsgirl's (from the TCM board) latest video montage:

I'd like to hang out at the "City Dump" hoping to meet The Bullocks, particularly Angelica Bullock. So, we can drink until we both see Pixies. Hopefully we don't run into Carlo.

Yes, I think the Fred and Ginger nightclubs are the best. I'd love to have cocktails there

Dear Moira,

Thanks for the photo of "Mother GinSling".... I always loved the way they did her up to resemble Medusa and her snaky hairdo!!!
Now there's a sight that one wouldn't want to see coming toward you in the night....

Seriously, Ona Munson could have had a Marlene Dietrich type career; she looked every bit as glamourous as MD...
I also thought she was great as Belle Watling and took her scene with Olivia hands down - - not an easy task!!

The Fred and Ginger sets are the best. Let's not forget the 'cafe' in Paris in the beginning of the Gay Divorcee with the chorus girls doing their bit with the hand dolls. My favorite is The Silver Sandal.

What's the difference between a nightclub and a cafe and which ones serve food, anyway?
