Sharpe

Post by MikeBSG »

I watched "Sharpe's Challenge" on Masterpiece Theater last night.

It was very predictable, but at least it wasn't yet another Jane Austen adaptation, so I stuck with it. It was fun and the battle scenes were well staged. I thought Sean Bean was a bit stiff and far prefered the guy who played the English renegade. The "practice" duel he fought with Sharpe was very well done.

Has anyone seen the earlier Sharpe TV series, or read the Sharpe novels? Or anything by Bernard Cornwell?

The plot of "Sharpe's Challenge" made me think of the Flashman stories played seriously.

I have never read the novels but I have seen the first nine Sharpe films. They vary in quality but I think for the most part they are pretty good and they certainly are a change of pace. I am not sure you need a lot of British Napoleonic war history but apart from the occasional thick, hard to understand accent I have enjoyed them. Of course, if you really like Sean Bean then..... There are sixteen total.
