The Rest of The TV Westerns

Post by movieman1957 »

"The Restless Gun."

Is a series from 1957 starring John Payne. He is also the executive producer. The series is kind of a "Have Gun Will Travel" - lite. Payne plays a good guy who is constantly drawn into situations where he gets to help people. He's handy with a gun but selective in how he uses it. He doesn't have the depth of Paladin but there are times where a little grit pops up when needed.

David Dortort (Bonanza)also produced. Dan Blocker shows up in a couple of early episodes. Michael Landon is in the pilot. Ray Teal plays a small role in one. Plenty of familiar faces make their way through as well.

Nothing deep. Payne is likeable. There is not much to distinguish it from so many of the other westerns of the day but its okay. (Discs from Netflix.)

The Restless Gun is a TV adaption of the very popular 1953 Jimmy Stewart radio series The Six Shooter. (http://www.archive.org/details/OTRR_The ... er_Singles)

I did screencaps of an episode called "No Way to Kill" and wrote a little piece about the show.

I've just been through the first disc but enjoyed it enough to carry on. I had no idea about its origins so I'll go learn some new stuff.

Thanks so much.

(It's odd that the first disc carries an old NBC logo on it.)
