Did you ever think you'd hear the word "virgin" and Don Knotts in the same sentence? (i.e. THE LOVE GOD?)

TCM has scheduled some additional premieres for September - the details are as follows:

Sep 29, 6 AM - Century of Animation Showcase (1923) (2023)
Sep 29, 7 AM - Walt's Early Wonderlands (1921) (2023)
Sep 29, 5:30 PM - The Ten Commandments (1923) (silent version)

These films are added as part of the National Silent Movie Day theme. The first 2 films are collections of early animation from the silent era. Last year on National Silent Movie Day, TCM showed ‘Century of Animation Showcase (1922) (2022)’, so the first film on the list above is probably an updated version of this collection. I believe the second animation collection is related to early Walt Disney cartoons, but TCM has so far provided little background information on these titles.

8:00

Back Street (1932)
1h 33m | Drama

a 1932 American pre-Code drama film directed by John M. Stahl and starring Irene Dunne and John Boles.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Fannie Hurst, it tells the story of a woman who spends her life as the secret mistress of a wealthy married man.[3] The devotion and love of the woman to the married man determines that she will be the “back streets” of him in the whole life; a story of a love that was not destined.[4] This was the first of three film versions of Hurst's novel, ..........

Director
John M. Stahl
Cast
Irene Dunne, John Boles, George Meeker

"....This subject has many implausible ideas. Mr. Boles's performance, even granted that he is a victim of trite lines and foolish incidents, is stodgy and unconvincing. Miss Dunne does well enough considering the wabbly character she plays. George Meeker is believable as Kurt Shendler. The dependable Zasu Pitts makes the most of a very small part and so does Robert McWade....

Daddy's Gone A-Hunting (1969)
1h 48m | Thriller | TV-14
A mentally disturbed man stalks a woman who had once aborted the child he had fathered.

Director
Mark Robson
Cast
Carol White, Scott Hylands, Paul Burke

"....Worthwhile B movie that fails to make the most of a good idea. And both Play Misty for Me(71) and Fatal Attraction(87) reworked its premise and plot. Mark Robson's direction is economical to a fault, and the film needs more detail and development;it feels perfunctory and thin like a made-for-TV film. And the supporting characters are cardboard.

The film has some effective scenes, generates interest and suspense, though the build-up is ultimately better than the payoff. Scott Hylands is very good and convincing but, Carol White is perhaps too stoic, and she doesn't garner much sympathy for her character. The rest of the cast goes through their paces without making an impression, except for an annoying housekeeper, and "Prissy",the cat. Ultimately, the subject matter and Scott Hylands' performance are what make it worthwhile. ...

I Cover the Waterfront (1933)
1h 10m | Drama | TV-MA
An investigative reporter romances a suspected smuggler's daughter.
Director

James Cruze
Cast
Ben Lyon, Claudette Colbert, Ernest Torrence

"In his review for The New York Times, film critic Mordaunt Hall called the film "a stolid and often grim picture".[14] While Hall felt the drama was not as good as some of director James Cruze's previous work, the "clever acting of the principals"—especially that of Ernest Torrence—offset some of the film's shortcomings.[14] Hall found some of the scenes "more shocking than suspenseful" and felt a broader adaptation of Max Miller's book may have been more interesting than the focus on the melodramatic series of incidents related to a sinister fisherman.[14]
While acknowledging that "Colbert does well as Julie", Hall did not find her convincing as a fisherman's daughter because she does not look the type.[14] Hall reserved his highest praise for Ernest Torrence in his final screen performance.[14] Torrence died on May 15, 1933, shortly after the film was completed. ....."

Cry Baby (1990)
1h 25m | Comedy | TV-MA

In 1950s Baltimore, a bad boy with a heart of gold wins the love of a good girl, whose boyfriend sets out for revenge.

The film centers on a group of delinquent youth who refer to themselves as "drapes" and their interaction with the rest of the town and its other subculture, the "squares", in 1950s Baltimore, Maryland. "Cry-Baby" Walker, a drape, and Allison, a square, disturb Baltimore society by breaking the subculture taboos and falling in love. The film shows what the young couple has to overcome to be together and how their actions affect the rest of the town. ....

Director
John Waters

Cast
Johnny Depp, Amy Locane, Polly Bergen, Susan Tyrrell, Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake and Traci Lords,

".....(RT's) site's consensus states: "John Waters' musical ode to the teen rebel genre is infectious and gleefully camp, providing star Johnny Depp with the perfect vehicle in which to lampoon his pin-up image."[6]
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded the film 3 out of 4 stars.[7] Metacritic calculated an average score of 63 out of 100 based on 22 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[8] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B-" on an A+ to F scale...."

Cry-Baby kind of feels like a homage to all those old AIP teen films. It doesn't add up to something big, but it is fun and eccentric.

Set in 1930s Germany, the film centers on the Essenbecks, a wealthy industrialist family who have begun doing business with the Nazi Party, and whose amoral and unstable heir, Martin (played by Berger in his breakthrough role), is embroiled in his family's machinations. It is loosely based on the Krupp family of steel industrialists....

Director
Luchino Visconti
Cast
Dirk Bogarde, Ingrid Thulin, Helmut Griem

"The film opened to worldwide acclaim. It received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and was named Best Foreign Film by the National Board of Review.
Among the international cast, Helmut Berger was singled out for his performance as Martin, a vicious sexual deviant who uses his amoral appetites to his own twisted ends. The film was the tenth-most popular movie at the French box office in 1970.[7]

The film has appeared on critics' lists such as the New York Times Best 1000 Movies Ever Made[8] and Halliwell's Top 1000: The Ultimate Movie Countdown...

Director
Bob Rafelson
Cast
Jack Nicholson, Jessica Lange, John Colicos

"....The film was screened out of competition at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival.[6] Upon release, the film was poorly received by many critics, who felt that the remake of the 1946 film of the same name was wasted. They also believed the ending was "very weak" compared to the original film. They also criticized that the meaning of the title is not explained in the remake, which led to confusion among viewers....
The film has since been received more favorably; it scores a 79% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 11 positive reviews and three negative. Kerry Segrave and Linda Martin praised the "charged chemistry" between Nicholson and Lange, and stated that Nicholson admitted that he was smitten with his co-star, remarking that she was a "big consensus movie sex bomb".[8] The film was nominated by the American Film Institute in 2002 for the AFI's 100 Years...100 Passions list. ...."

Director
Shiro Toyoda
Cast
Hideko Takamine, Hiroshi Akutagawa, Jukichi Uno

"...a beautifully shot film that captures with subtlety and grace the central character's tragedy through its images. It is also an admirable film for its restraint in not descending into the pit of tear-jerking sentimentality that so many Japanese films of the period (even some of the good ones) so frequently did....

Shirô Toyoda directs this fine adaptation of the hard life of poor Miss Takamine, from a novel by Ogai Mori. Toyoda was one of the many talented Japanese directors of the era. He directed his first movie in 1929, the last of almost 70 in 1976. He was best regarded for his literary adaptations like this one.

There are no clear villains in this movie. Everyone is trapped into the role that circumstances and economics dictates. They all long be free, but which of them will escape,.......

The Ten Commandments (1923)
1h 50m

A prolog depicts the Biblical stories from Exodus: the ill-treatment of the Jews by the Egyptians; their escape across the parted water of the Red Sea; the presentation to Moses of the Ten Commandments; Moses finding the Israelites worshipping the golden calf; and his breaking of the tablets.
Main Story: The remainder of the film takes place in modern-day San Francisco. Two brothers, John and Dan McTavish, love Mary Leigh. She chooses Dan, who becomes a wealthy building contractor by using inferior materials and bribing the building inspector, Redding. This is the beginning of his downfall, ending in his death....

"....Jeanie MacPherson, the film's screenwriter, first thought to "interpret the Commandments in episodic form".[2] Both she and DeMille eventually decided on an unusual two-part screenplay: a biblical prologue and a modern story demonstrating the consequences of breaking the Ten Commandments.[2] In a treatment for the film, MacPherson described the four main characters of the modern story:

"There are four people in the modern story of The Ten Commandments, and they view these Commandments in four different ways....."

......On its release, critics praised The Ten Commandments overall; however, the part of the film set in modern times received mixed reviews.[14] Variety, for example, declared the opening scenes alone worth the admission price, but found the remainder of the film disappointing by comparison: "The opening Biblical scenes of The Ten Commandments are irresistible in their assembly, breadth, color and direction [...] They are immense and stupendous, so big the modern tale after that seems puny."[3]

According to the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 83% of critics have given the film a positive review ...
