I had some mushrooms in college that were pretty good!

Interesting, this talk of black cherry soda. I keep ALMOST buying some, but going with root beer instead! In my store, they're right next to each other, in bottles by IBC. I love a beverage in a bottle. Aluminum and plastic just aren't the same. On the negative side, bottles make your burden a little heavier. Pick your poison!

Whenever I think of bottled soda, I think of my mom's beauty shop when I was growing up. They had an old fashioned pop machine, a floor one that looked like a freezer. With bottles, not cans. There is nothing in this world as good as an ice cold pepsi or orange crush in a bottle from a vending machine on a warm day.

Wendy:

It was quite good. The brand was Saranac -1888. It is listed as a Black Cherry Cream. The label has a 5 cents return for your state.

They had an old fashioned pop machine

Absolutely. I'm always regaling young people with my old fashioned Coke stories. (In the south, it was all Coke. It could be orange, lemon lime, whatever. We called it Coke!) There's no question that I pre-date the age of the pop-top. I remember that little invention. But when I was real young, we didn't see many cans at all. We drank from bottles. Vending machines had little bottle openers attached to them.

A neighbor of ours insisted Coke tasted better specifically from a small bottle. The classic 8 ounce! I can't say my tastes are that defining. But who knows? I wonder if today's generation looks back and says, "Remember when computers had to be plugged into the wall? Amazing!"

I remember those 8 ounce bottles ... it was popular in the rural area of Washington State in the mid-50's to mid-60's and I agree with your neighbor's assessment of drinking Coca Cola out of these small bottles ... the classic 8 ounce.

Thanks for sharing this Red River.

When I was a kid in the sixties we still had Coke in the small glass bottles (probably eight ounce) but it tasted the same as in the larger bottles. However, my mother has said that the small bottles back in the forties when she was a kid tasted different -- that they were stronger, made with more syrup. So people who like soda sweeter may have preferred those small bottles of Coke back in the day. :)

I noticed it was sweeter when I was in America and we Brits like our sweet stuff. The kids call anything sparkling fizzy pop. Only at weekends we say.

Ahhhhh, the power of suggestion. I went out and bought a 2-liter bottle the other day.

It only lasted two days.

I am having a deeply passionate affair.

With Nutella.
