I like it, too. Some great movie clips plus a very personal point of view from Dobe.

I don't have that much time to watch TCM so I haven't seen this new Harry Carey, Jr. segment. Is it online anywhere?

If I find it, Paula, I'll post a link. With the new format I'm still getting used to things at TCM City. :D

I wanted to add that since The Searchers is airing tonight, they may show it shortly beforehand so you may want to keep an eye on the channel if you can.

It was on 2 nights ago? I lose track of time. It is a lovely look at the Wayne from a friend's point of view.

In the early days of the TCM website circa 1999/2000, they did a couple of on-line interviews with Dobey. A few years back I posted the link on of the Rambles threads at TCM City but I don't know if you can even find it these days.

I used the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive and found these:

http://replay.waybackmachine.org/200010 ... chives.htm

http://replay.waybackmachine.org/200008 ... _harry.htm

http://replay.waybackmachine.org/200102 ... r_john.htm

It also reveals how much the TCM site has changed over the years.

Boy, has it ever changed. Thank you for those links. It was a pleasure reading the interviews.

I came across a story that I'd never heard before about John Wayne's long reach over the imagination. It was mentioned in two books--one by the late comedian Alan King and another by former New York mayor Ed Koch, so maybe it is actually true?

In 1982, in Williamsburg, a section of Brooklyn that is a long way from Park Avenue, and even farther away from Hollywood, there was a new elementary school being built. When it was nearly finished and ready to roll the NYC Schools had a good idea. In a moment of inspiration, someone in power decided that the children who would actually be attending P.S. 380 might like to name their school. Located in a neighborhood with a largely Latino, Hasidic and African American population, you might guess that the kids would choose to name the school after someone like Malcolm X, Benito Juarez, Rabbi Hillel or even Desi Arnaz. But no. The children chose to name the Marcy Avenue school after the one and only John Wayne.

All seven of John Wayne's children showed up for the school's dedication and the artist Knox Martin created a 38 foot glass mural depicting the exploration of the frontier for the interior of the school, which as you can see below, featured Wayne surrounded by a sea of colorful people and activities. John Wayne Elementary is, btw, one of the schools that has received a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence designation from the U.S. Dept. of Education.

That really is some story. Thank you, Moira. I'm sure the Duke would have been so moved by that.

I wanted to let you guys know that the Harry Carey, Jr remembrance of John Wayne is airing again on TCM.

I think it first aired a more than a few years back (I'm mid-century modern and can't remember facts the way I used to, but I don't think I'm alone in this) but hasn't been seen much since. I think it first aired at least ten years back but I could be wrong.

I caught it on Saturday morning prior to Buck Rogers.

Here's hoping it is back in rotation as it is a very lovely remembrance and very well put together.

Kudos to all involved!

And here's hoping that one of these days TCM is able to talk Dobe into sitting down with Robert O as a guest programmer or, barring a long trip to Atlanta (from Santa Barbara where the Careys live), perhaps a trip to Hollywood as part of the TCM Film Festival!

Here's hoping!

Absolutely! I would pay extra money to see him with RO.

I saw the tribute yesterday, and it choked me up. Again.
