And Clarence Muse had a law degree, graduating with a degree in International Law from The Dickinson School of Law of Pennsylvania in 1911. Discouraged by the lack of opportunity for African-American attorneys he went into show biz, becoming a performer, composer, playwright and union organizer who helped gain more recognition for black performers at a time when roles were scarce and often demeaning.

Ralph Morgan (the elder brother of the more famed Frank) was also a trained attorney who had graduated from Columbia University, but abandoned the life before the bar in 1908 for the stage. This rash act appalled his Episcopalian and Republican parents who raised their 11 children in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY where they ran the Angostura Bitters company. Even worse (!), Ralph was a bit of a socialist politically and later played a key role in the founding of SAG and the first president of the screen actor's union in 1933 and again in later years.

Before we get too carried away hijacking this thread, (sorry Joe!) listing these illustrious careers that might have been, I should mention that Christopher Walken was a lion tamer when he was 15 years old!! He told an interviewer that he was interested in joining the circus after a boyhood as a stage performer (mostly in musicals), but that "the lion [used in the act] was very old and 'really more like a dog.'" No wonder he always seemed so strangely calm.

That may explain a lot (or nothing). I only hope to live long enough to see how he is perceived by the next generation. He and Jeff Bridges may (I'm projecting now) be considered the great actors of this era.
