The AFI posted a list of Top Ten Epic films. I thought this thread was the best matchup for that topic.

1) Lawrence of Arabia
2) Ben-Hur (1959)
3) Schindler's List
4) Gone With the Wind
5) Spartacus
6) Titanic (Cameron)
7) All Quiet on the Western Front
8) Saving Private Ryan
9) Reds
10) The Ten Commandments (1956)

I have some problems with both "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" as epics. Clearly this is a catergory far more elastic than "western" or "musical".

I don't see All Quiet as an "epic," in the same league with Lawrence, Spartacus, or even Reds. And not a single silent on the list? Come on, AFI.

I love All Quiet, but I wouldn't consider it an epic either.

1. Spartacus
2. The Bridge on the River Kwai
3. The Birth of a Nation
4. Barry Lyndon
5. Gone With The Wind
6. Apocalypse Now
7. Ryan's Daughter
8. The Thin Red Line
9. Intolerance
10. Lord of the Rings
