10) Jerry Maguire
I guess I just don't really think of "Jerry Maguire" as a sports movie. You might as well say "The Fortune Cookie" is a sports movie.

I haven't seen National Velvet, and I didn't like The Hustler, but otherwise the list is pretty solid.
I would have found room for Eight Men Out, The Bad News Bears, and Bang The Drum Slowly.

On the whole, many of these AFI lists don't really go back very far to find their choices. In this sports case, I think Jim Thorpe, All American, Knute Rockne, and Brian's Song should all have had some kind of mention. If Brian's Song's director and producer had had a little faith in themselves and released the original as a theatrical release instead of made for TV, they probably would have made themselves a small fortune. In spite of being Chicago Bears, Brian and Gayle were both pretty nationally respected players and their story was probably of interest to a lot of folks.

I think Slap Shot has to be on that list. And please drop Jerry Maguire, there are dozens of films that would make that list before Jerry.
Raging Bull and Rocky are solid choices. Which sport do you all think makes for the best adaption to the big screen?

Probably boxing. You have direct confrontation there and movie people are used to staging fights anyway. I am not one of those people who can go on and on for hours about how the baseball in "Pride of the Yankees" looks so lousy, but I have endured some of them, and I guess it is harder to fake baseball (and other sports) than it is boxing.
