Roy Earle is one of Bogie's more romantic characters, I prefer him to Rick although I'm a sucker for Casablanca.

The performance of Ida's that really stood out for me is On Dangerous Ground, I thought she was terrific as the blind woman, such an effective performance stealing the movie from the guys.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I just came across this photo, and had to post it! It combines two things that Moira loves, Ida and knitting. I think she looks stunning here!

She's so young and pretty in this shot. Apparently she's knitting herself a skirt. Yikes!

I know! Hard to believe a young showgirl would be spending her time in such an innocent way.

I was thinking she was knitting the rest of her top, that's quite a decolletage. She looks so young and innocent here, no sign of some of her characters to come.

I agree with you here, Alison. "ON DANGEROUS GROUND" is a movie I recently discovered one, two years ago. Robert Ryan's change of heart and Ida Lupino's blind woman were two of the reasons. I called it Redemption in the Snow. Ida hit it out of the ball park. Dang, it's a little too heart-wrenching for me to revisit...so maybe I have to find "They Drive By Night" to get my jolt of Lupino: black, no sugar...and insane.

Gotta agree with all the praise for On Dangerous Ground. Two great actors who were never less than excellent, but here at their best. Also one of the three Nicholas Ray movies that really grabs me, the others being In a Lonely Place and They Live by Night. And one of Bernard Herrmann's best scores. He was so impressed by the beautiful performance by Virginia Majewski of the viola d'amore solo that he wanted her to receive screen credit. The powers that be told he that he could share his card if he wanted to, and he did!

But then again, Red, Ray sure knew what to do with cinemascope!

Just saw a wonderful Ida stint on The Twilight Zone, and lively Martin Balsam played the agent to her aging screen star persona, Barbara Trenton. They also spared no expense on the sets and costumes because the atmosphere and gowns were apropo. She looked lovely. It had a sort of Sunset Boulevard theme, but with a much more uplifting finale, and was entitled "The Sixteen Millimeter Shrine." Ida was the only woman who starred in an episode AND directed one.
