Rio Grande
Re: Rio Grande
Batch 4.
The most beautifully lit tent in the history of tents on film. :)
Ford always incorporated some Murnau into his films.

Re: Rio Grande
The look of old heartaches on her face while they listen to the singers always gets to me. Lovely photos, Paula!

Re: Rio Grande
JackFavell wanted some shots of John Wayne by the river. So jumping ahead of a few scenes... here are some pics from that scene. ;)

Re: Rio Grande
Going back a bit, I noticed that finger point from Travis Tyree...
And that is by far THE most incredible, charming picture of Fred Kennedy ever, after the big fight. Shucks, I never noticed how good looking he was before.

Re: Rio Grande
Paula, please accept the congratulations of a "new kid on the block" for your beautiful work here. If anyone can even glance at this post and not want to see the film again immediately, they probably don't really like movies. Thanks. Bob
Re: Rio Grande
Hi, Bob! So glad you like the screencaps but the true thanks go to John Ford, cinematographer Bert Glennon, everyone involved with that movie and Olive Films for the new DVD and Blu-ray. :)
I will be posting more as soon as I get past this icky cold. Right now my main goal in life is to go downstairs and pass out on the couch. ;)

Re: Rio Grande
Glad you all are enjoying the screencaps. Here are some more from the next 20 mins (approximately). :)
Batch 1
The bugler is played by Shug Fisher, one of those ubiquitous character actors who had an extensive career in film and television. His comedy shtick was playing this kind of goofy, stuttering fellow, but in real life he was an extremely accomplished singer-songwriter-musician. He was a member of the Ford stock company and also a member of Sons of the Pioneers for several years in the early 1940s. According to Wikipedia, Ken Curtis, with whom he'd been friends for decades, was at his bedside when he died in 1984.

Batch 2
This is the one moment I don't like in Rio Grande, when Kathleen faints during the battle when someone is shot off his horse right in front of her. She's a steel magnolia, a strong-willed, stubborn, Irish-Southern lady who lived through the Civil War and probably saw all kinds of horrors during those years. No, I just don't buy it.
