The Silver Screen Oasis

Have just learned of a wonderful site for anyone who enjoys digging into the films that were shot (at least partly) in the City By the Bay:

You can spend hours visiting all the places in Vertigo and seeing them “Then” and “Now” or you can choose a location, say Union Square, and see the films that used that location, including in this case that wonderful opening sequence in The Conversation. Sad to say, I don’t think it would have the same impact filmed there today. (And not just because the City of Paris is gone!)

Whatever, you do, don’t leave without checking out "Irene‘s Apartment Views" in Dark Passage. You’ll learn a fascinating mystery of the view from her window. If you want to go there first, click this:

San Francisco is the only city I almost always recognize in movies. Even more than Chicago, where I lived for many years. It's those hills!

I'd be more interested in Madge's apartment building; and seeing where Agnes plunged out the window.... I visit San francisco every October for a royalty conference and nobody seems to know anything about it - of course, they're not movie fans...

When I first saw Dark Passage on TV in 1957 (I was a dumb 15), I asked her if it hurt to fall so far and how they did that stunt.
She had a wonderful sense of humour and told me, "It's not the falling that I minded, but the splat at the end!!!"......

I already knew how great it feels to have someone guide me to a great place to visit. I now find it's even nicer to be the guide.

Thanks you so much for all this information. It's fascinating to see photos of these places in San Francisco in the 40s and how they look today.
Maybe one day I 'll get to San Francisco and visit all the locations for Vertigo and Dark Passage!

It's so nice to find a place where people are actually kind to each other and share information and opinions instead of playing who's got the biggest . . . ego.

When I mentioned this website, I thought it would appeal only to those who have fond memories of some of the classics that filmed here. I'm glad to see there are so many who are fond of our hills.

Now, if only the producers would take note and stop trying to pretend that Canada is the United States.
