In the final scene (before the dissolve to the town) Ruth Popper (played by Cloris Leachman) is comforting Sonny Crawford (played by Timothy Bottoms), who is grieving the death of his friend Billy. Ruth is the wife of the high school coach. She was having an affair with Sonny before he jilted her to date the high school girl played by Cybill Shepherd.
Cloris Leachman won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in the movie, competing against her co-star Ellen Burstyn in that category.
Sonny's friend Billy was played by Sam Bottoms, who was the brother of Timothy Bottoms.
