Garbo Day

Anyone watching? Assuming it's her birthday as I know she's a Virgo. I'm recording Susan Lenox (which I haven't seen in a long time) and The Painted Veil (mostly for her outfits!).

I recall many years ago being impressed by Garbo in "Romance." She has lighter hair, I believe. Her silents are my faves, her talkies characters are rather ordinary (possible exception the ballet dancer where she is over the top; but pulls it off.) I see there are no silents today, sad.

One time I was taking the "minutes" at a faculty meeting, and my colleagues were complaining about the new copy machine. So I put down "it stinks on ice." At the next meeting when the minutes were distributed, one of my colleagues said "I am not familiar with that expression."

I believe Mel Brooks uses that phrase in History of the World Part I. As the French king, somebody tells him the peasants are revolting and he replies "you said it. They stink on ice."

I remember hearing the phrase as a kid (which is a long time ago), but I'm not sure in what context.

Funny! I might start using that expression.

Love Greta in NINOTCHKA. Her best film imo, silent or sound.

I've seen that film so many times though. I'm kinda Garboed out. Camille is still my favorite but I've seen that so many times too. Her early talkies aren't all that great, but they are less familiar to me so I tend to record them once in awhile or her silents the rare times they are shown.

I saw enough of QUEEN CHRISTINA (1933) to remember it's one of my favorite romance films, sans sex.

And the only JOHN GILBERT film I know I like... (I don't look at silents often.)

Garbo is one of the greatest of all screen stars.... Time with her films is never poorly spent
