Hi, HOLLIS.
I think you're giving Hearst too much credit. SINGLEHANDIDLY??? Teddy helped somewhat. And Teddy was one of our five top presidents.

MORALDO In re: power of a song, I've watched some 90 minute movies that I didn't like just to hear / see one song or dance. I've seen IN OLD CHICAGO several times A movie I thought boring but I liked the song, I'LL NEVER LET YOU CRY . Others where one scene was the whole movie for me: the BOJANGLES ...

Re: Starlift (1951)

Hi, MOIRA Your post about Doris Day put me in mind of a previous Hollywood policy. When an actor made a big splash, He / she was put in a series of less artistic parts wsith hackneyed stories. to cash in. ( don't make it good, make it Tuesday ) Off hand Grace Moore ( ONE NIGHT OF LOVE ) and John Gar...

Re: At Random

Question, JUDY?? My spotty memory tells me that in Manhattan, the city blocks running east _ west are noticeably longer than thuse running north _ south. Am I wrong? I never bothered much with maps and it's been a long time. Of course, out of towners know more about NYC than the people who live ther...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

LI'L ABNER. It's very difficult( impossible?) to transfer a comic strip to the screen, unless music is added. Norman Panama and Melvin Frank did and came up with a winner. Some good songs (Johnny Mercer / Gene de Paul), grade A choreography ( Michael Kidd / Dee Dee Wood), and some terrific dancing. ...

Re: GARBO!

The posts about Garbo sound like a pressagents' convention. A while back, I said some nice things about Julie Harris ... mild, I didn't use words like goddess or divine and boy, did I get pounded. I enjoyed the contraversy, it was fun. Now, there's all this praise for Garbo and not a word of disagre...

Re: Showboat 1936-1951, which is best.

Hi, Stu mY MEMORY SAYS toss up. With me it's the songs and how they're done. Each one had a bevy of good singers, Dunne, Grayson, Jones, Keel. Robeson, Warrick etc. I take it, Gardner was dubbed. Morgan was very popular at one time but I don't regard her as a great singer, not like Ginny Simms for e...

Re: Busby Berkeley

In a movie called INTERNATIONAL HOUSE ( Paramount c. 1932) they used that one with the camera going under the chorines legs. I don't know who did the choreography I've forgotten the song. Possably SHE WAS A CHINA TEACUP AND HE WAS JUST A MUG It was very daring and censorable. Berkeley did some numbe...
