Re: New Keaton releases by Kino

It's funny. I was always signed into my account so everything played fine. But I just signed out and now I can see the blockage. They took part 1 to my long piece but it looks they left the other parts alone for now. Now I have to go see what I can do about the other 2. [youtube]http://www.youtube.c...

Re: New Keaton releases by Kino

That's too bad, it sounds like a great combination. I will keep my eye out (ouch!) in case the sound suddenly comes back on The First Flickers. :D I think I figured out how to get my video back on with out the sound getting knocked out (sound is rather important here....) http://www.youtube.com/use...

Re: It Happened In Brooklyn

If you want to hear the definitive musical version of The Brooklyn Bridge search out Sinatra's Columbia recording of the song. It has a lilt and a bounce that the film's recording can't compete with. However, I do like the image in the film of Frank casually walking across the bridge with his hands ...

Re: The Last Flight (1931)

I certainly wouldn't categorize it as a great movie but it is definitely engaging and quite moving at times. The tone is Hemingway-esque, which isn't surprising considering it's a road taken by most films that deal with the veterans of the First War drinking and carousing to forget. It also isn't su...

Re: John Alton: Painting with Light

I was always under the impression that John Alton was a valued member of the Freed Unit during their creative heyday of the early 50's and now I realize that his only work with them was An American In Paris . Now I need to go re-visit Hugh Fordin's book on Freed because it seemed Alton came up a lot...

Re: Erich Maria Remarque - his works on film

I don't think I fully understand why these men in So Ends the Night and Arch of Triumph can't get passports, I can only assume that they are on the run from the Nazi regime and are not lucky enough to have sponsors who can get them safe conduct to another country. All through the film hubby was ask...

Re: Dual At Diablo

Don't be listening to those who demean Garner's acting abilities. He had his limitations like most big stars but when he was in his wheelhouse he shined in films like The Great Escape (1963) , The Wheeler Dealers (1963) , The Americanization of Emily (1964) , Support Your Local Sheriff (1969) and Sk...

Re: Wagon Master (1950) - January 16, 2009 1:00 p.m. EST

One of the underlying themes of the great 'action' directors who learned their trade in the silent era and went on to greater acclaim in the sound era (Ford, Hawks, Wellman, Fleming, Walsh..etc.) is the pattern of strong roles for both men & women in their films. Wellman and Walsh gravitated tow...

Re: Wagon Master (1950) - January 16, 2009 1:00 p.m. EST

In the same manner that Hitchcock was later criticized for ushering in the drive-in grind-house, exploitation flicks because of the wild success of "Psycho" - (1960) , so too could Ford be given credit for popularizing a western plot element that became a mainstay - the sadistic, backwoods...

Re: 7 Women (1966)

This movie definitely came and went when it was first released. Critic were quite unified, however, in praising Anne Bancroft's performance. Ford biographers look at his final films (this and Young Cassidy (1965) ) as his attempt at being contemporary in the eyes of modern film-goers. The sex and vi...

Re: Thelma Todd SUTS Day?

It seems that all of the major Roach stars had some kind of musical abilities in them. When Leo McCarey was on the lot he always had a piano on the set and when ever they were stuck for an idea they would stop working and who ever was nearby (Chase, Laurel & Hardy) would gather around Leo's pian...

Re: Thelma Todd SUTS Day?

The great thing about Thelma Todd having her own day on TCM was the showcasing of the great Roach shorts shown without the annoying TCM logo (they call it a bug) on constantly. It makes for better recordings. And it is her work in the comedy shorts that I would like to elaborate on. During Todd's ei...

Re: New Keaton releases by Kino

Gary - That was fantastic! I am assuming the large spinning man who goes buckety-buckety into the pool right at the middle point of the video is Billy Gilbert? I also LOVED the song Heartaches used as background for your incredibly well edited series of ....well.... heartaches. Who's version was it...
