Re: George Raft

Moira, I don't know if I mentioned this before but two reasons were given for Robinson not appearing with Raft in "Some Like It Hot." Tony Curtis maintained that it was because Robinson still held a grudge toward George (even though they worked well together in "A Bullet for Joey"...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Right with you, Erik. Watched it again myself and the film just keeps getting better and better. Cushing is his usual excellent self and I was thinking the same: how great he and Robert Urquhart play off each other. And I still say Christopher Lee's interpretation of the Creature is superb. And Joe:...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

That (ulp) almost sounds likely . . . with Matthew Lillard in the Jerry Van Dyke role. Voice of `Mother`: Fran Descher.

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

True - and also their original subject matter, such as the ill-conceived remake of STAGECOACH . And sadly it seems as if Hollywood is running out of gas when it comes to originality, rehashing old (and not so old) movies and even TV series to attract audiences. Dare I mention "The Honeymooners&...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Yet I will say I rather enjoyed the recent remake of THE WOLF MAN - which even my wife did, and she is NOT a fan of horror movies. Not that I'd purchase the DVD or even necessarily watch it again, but I found it pretty entertaining (or maybe my mood was right for it) -- up until that ridiculous plot...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Sometimes I think it is better that some of these horror films didn't adhere too closely to the books. When such attempts were made, such as MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTEIN, the results were less than impressive. BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA was a little better (Keanu Reeve's wooden performance notwithstanding...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

I like the colors in the Hammer Films, too, and still maintain colorful items and such were used by the studio to disguise the oft-times small interior sets. A critic once remarked that the color in THE MUMMY was so rich that one could almost scrape it off with a palette knife. I appreciate REVENGE ...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Tom Weaver`s opinion notwithstanding, they`re all fun. As I`ve said before, I can`t imagine my childhood without these fine films, usually played at Saturday matinees in double-bill reissues. Actually, the monsters were secondary to dear Peter Cushing. His performance as Baron Frankenshtein (as usua...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Yet it's interesting how Strange's interpretation seems to have become the more iconic. The stiff movements and outstretched arms. When we played Frankenstein as kids that was how we always portrayed him. Even was the image on the old Aurora plastic model kit. I rather like Christopher Lee's portray...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

I've always wondered about that. Can't really picture - given Glenn Strange's interpretation of the Monster - how Karloff could have coached him. The two characterizations are pretty dissimilar.

Re: CANDIDS II

I think you hit the nail on the head on both counts, Moira. Bela really never socialized with the Hollywood film community, preferring to surround himself with his fellow Hungarians, with whom he felt more comfortable. His wife Lillian was to say that Bela could speak perfectly good English but I be...

Re: CANDIDS II

Joe, from what I understand, Bela's resentment toward Rathbone was twofold. Bela was somewhat bitter, his pride hurt, back when he did SON OF FRANKENSTEIN because initially his part as Ygor was to be much smaller and his salary was a pittance in comparison to what Basil and Boris were receiving: A m...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Very true, Joe, how Karloff's monster in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN does almost come across as a prop. Truth be told, Lugosi's Ygor really steals the film and as I've maintained he truly deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance. His Ygor is miles away from Dracula or the other characters he portray...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Yes, good call, Joe. Although I'm a huge fan of Rathbone, he really does overdo it in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN . At moments, in fact, he's almost embarrassingly bad. Fortunately his near-hysterics are nicely counterbalanced by the magnificent Lionel Atwill. Still, nothing is as irritating in that film as...
