Re: Westerns

I think one thing that has not been stated about Unforgiven is the fact that Eastwood's character is never seen as a truly bad man in this film. That is his past. When the film opens, he is a widower with a farm and two children and lives a quiet, mundane existence. He takes the job because his fami...

Re: Westerns

I too wish they would quit showing the graphic beginnings on Bones. We've already established that Bones is not affected by it, and the only other reason would be to show something that had to do with the actual case... but that hardly ever is how it works out. It's just gratuitous. Totally agree. ...

Re: Westerns

Joel, I also think you are pretty special, because you jumped in to talk about a movie when everyone else was cutting it down, which shows how passionate you are about all movies getting a just examination. It's a tough thing to do, and I especially liked your rough summation of the themes, it will...

Re: Westerns

I guess I'll be the one to stick up for Unforgiven . There are a lot of great ideas and themes in the movie which basically deconstructs the mythology of the old west and gives viewers what they claim to want (violence and a gun battle) while revealing the hard truth of what taking a human life actu...

Re: The November 2013 Schedule on TCM

I'm so happy you posted about this, Arkadin. I've been wanting to dip my toe in but was too scared! :D You hooked me completely with that inner discussion the lead/murderer has within himself. That to me is brilliant, letting him narrate. It sounds like it lends itself to that 'what is the truth' t...

Re: The November 2013 Schedule on TCM

TCM actually shows a bona fide giallo from one of the masters on the 16th with Mario Bava's Hatchet for the Honeymoon (1970). Re: The November 2013 Schedule on TCM

Joel, thanks for mentioning Hatchet for a Honeymoon, I would never have noticed it without your review above. Time to have a look see! Wendy, as I said, this one is pretty unconventional in the sense that we are told from the beginning who the killer is. They mystery aspect is why he does it. Bava'...

TCM actually shows a bona fide giallo from one of the masters on the 16th with Mario Bava's Hatchet for the Honeymoon (1970). Short review from the Giallo thread below: Mario Bava takes a completely different approach for his 1970 giallo, Hatchet for the Honeymoon , showing us the face of the murder...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I remember thinking McCabe and Mrs. Miller was brilliant when I first saw it in my twenties, but I haven't seen it since. I think it kind of depends on whether you can take that kind of free form style or not. I found meaning within it. I see McCabe & Mrs. Miller as one of the great revisionist...

Re: The Mercenary AKA A Professional Gun (1968)

Palance is also great in the shootout, where he seems to have won and then his carnation begins to turn red and he dies before he can "cross" himself. Incidentally, it's no coincidence that his character in City Slickers (1991) is named "Curly" in reference to this film. [youtube...
