Re: Raoul Walsh

You have all (mostly) got the right idea about Raoul Walsh. He has always has a tendency towards nostalgia. Here's something I wrote about that some years back. The device of presenting the opening credits of a film on the turning pages of a book has generally been a weak attempt to establish respec...

Re: Ida Lupino

But then again, Red, Ray sure knew what to do with cinemascope!

Re: FRANK BORZAGE

Thanks, knit. I think it does. I've been thinking about Borzage a lot for some years now, but that thought never occurred to me. Sometimes talking with another person is stimulating and inspiring. I remember one time about a year ago, our dear Maven and I were talking about Shadow of a Doubt, and af...

Re: FRANK BORZAGE

Goddess, I think you hit the nail right on the head! Trina does indeed grow from her relationship with Bill. This is one of the things I love most about Borzage's sensibility as an artist. In his films, love is not the end, but the beginning. His couples help and teach each other. They grow and chan...

Re: FRANK BORZAGE

Interesting, Goddess, that you cite Lilliom along with Man's Castle. Oddly, I had never made that connection before. I have never liked Molnar's play or any of its adaptations, even the visually beautiful Borzage version. I can accept a great deal of tolerance in the name of love, but in no way does...

Re: Ida Lupino

Gotta agree with all the praise for On Dangerous Ground. Two great actors who were never less than excellent, but here at their best. Also one of the three Nicholas Ray movies that really grabs me, the others being In a Lonely Place and They Live by Night. And one of Bernard Herrmann's best scores. ...

Re: Ida Lupino

I haven't seen it in ages, Theresa. When I was a kid it was on television ALL the time, like Trade Winds. Just saw Sadie Thompson for the first time in many years. I should put something on the Walsh thread, but I don't have too much of a positive nature to say about it.

Re: Raoul Walsh

You said it, RedRiver, Asphalt Jungle is the heist movie that they all try to top, but don't quite make it. Also, it's nice to see Marilyn Monroe before Fox turned her into a cartoon!

Right, Goddess and Kingrat! I guess I identify because, in spite of my love for the great twentieth century art form, I am essentially a nineteenth century man. Bob

Re: Raoul Walsh

Thanks, Theresa, for a new perspective on an old favorite High Sierra, plus connecting it to the four other films. Glad you mentioned John Huston, Goddess. Theresa's mention of his Fat City reminded me of how many of his films are about failure! They never find the Falcon. The gold is scattered all ...

Re: Raoul Walsh

Ah, Theresa, it would be a joy to see Italy with you, with or without movies. I felt totally at home the minute I got off the plane, even though Italian is one of the few ethnicities not part of my melting-pot family. Here I can't resist letting my vanity take over. One afternoon is Florence I was a...

Re: Raoul Walsh

Theresa, I wish more people in all the gin joints on the internet would heed your words. I don't understand why so many people all over the web will expend a lot of effort posting negative views, and let's face it, it is fun, yes, but also work! Back to Raoul Walsh. Over in Italy, the Cineteca di Bo...
