Re: POTPOURRI

Anne, I saw The Tree of Life a few years ago. I have to say that I loved it. I sort of knew a little bit about the style of the film going in, so that helped. I really did not expect to love it as much as I did. I liked the lack of dialogue once I got used to it. I think that you are right on about ...

Re: Sheana Ochoa, Author of STELLA! Mother of Modern Acting

Thanks so much for your replies, Sheana! I'm really enjoying reading this thread.

Did Stella Adler fall into teaching acting, or was it something that she sought out? Was there any element of her own acting process that she felt couldn't be taught, an element of talent or imagination?

Re: Sheana Ochoa, Author of STELLA! Mother of Modern Acting

Welcome, Ms. Ochoa! As an actor myself, and as someone who works in youth theatre, I often hear many misconceptions about what Method acting is. Could you illuminate what Stella Adler's beliefs were in terms of how an actor approaches playing a role? And how did this come to differ with Strasberg's ...

Re: Biopics

Coal Miner's Daughter about the life of country singer Loretta Lynn is one of the best bio-pics. I always seem to catch bits and pieces of it whenever it's on TCM. I've seen the whole film, of course, years ago. Sissy Spacek's performance knocks me out.

Re: WHAT MUSICALS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Last night, I watched the Fox musical The I Don't Care Girl starring Mitzi Gaynor as vaudevillian Eva Tanguay. Wow, what a mess. First of all, it's one of those Hollywood bio-pics that completely invents the subject's life. They actually made Tanguay's life boring. Tanguay was known for her famous s...

Re: Bette Davis

Bringing up an old thread to comment on the fine performance on Bette Davis in The Catered Affair (1956). I saw this film for the first time recently and was so taken by Davis' performance as a working class middle aged wife and mother, New Yawk accent and all. Yes, she was still BETTE DAVIS, but th...

Beautiful post, Wendy. You said everything that I was thinking, except that I didn't know I was thinking it until I read your post! Ha!

Yes, Gable blew me away as well. I feel like I saw Gable the man in his portrayal, not just the character of Gay.

Re: Musings on The Misfits

Sorry to bump up an old thread--I just watched The Misfits for the first time the other day. I have been thinking about it so much. I was so moved by all of the performances. Gable's drunken breakdown as he shouts for his kids, Clift's scene in the phone booth--standouts for their vulnerability. Mar...

Re: 'Round the World Weather Report

After one of the longest, snowiest winters in years, we are having a cooler-than-normal summer here in northeast Ohio. I haven't minded too much, but I was thinking how there haven't been that many days that would be fun to go swimming. I don't think it ever hit 90 degrees here this year. Unusual. A...

Re: Netflix Films Streaming and DVD By Mail

You are most welcome! Some good classic titles on Netflix streaming right now: Sabrina, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing, The Apartment, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Daddy Long Legs, The Long Hot Summer. I recently watched The Magic Bow--a Gainesborough film starring Stewart Granger and Phyllis ...

Re: Judi Dench-Philomena-Jane Russell Controversy

Anne, do you have a public library close by? I was able to watch Philomena recently by checking the dvd out from my library. A fantastic film.

I wondered about the truth of the Jane Russell story in the film, too. Perhaps they changed the name of the convent.
