Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

moirafinnie It's been great having a chance to ask all kinds of questions over the weekend. I hope you enjoyed it as least as much as we did and that you'll be okay post-Sandy. It would be great if you ever wanted to visit again and share your thoughts on any of the topics here. Before you go, since...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

kingrat Thank you so much for visiting with us. Because I'm interested in Jean Negulesco's early films, it was amusing to learn that the four principals in Johnny Belinda directed themselves. Did Lew Ayres have more to say about working with Negulesco? It sounds like Negulesco was more interested in...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Being a New Yorker, I wanted to send warning, that a power outage and/or internet failure is possible tomorrow because of the storm.

If you are in the area, good luck yo you all.

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Sue Sue Applegate Lesley, were you able to visit much with Lew's son, Justin, in preparing your biography? If so, what does he feel about his father's legacy? And were they close? Justin is a very sweet man and I had several conversations with him and met him in California to see the how Lew lived i...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

CharlieChaplinFan What illness did Lew contract during his military service and how long did it affect him? Was it something that bothered him for the rest of his life? During the war, Dengue Fever was widespread in the pacific, especially New Guinea where he was stationed. He recovered, but it took...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

One more question: I recently saw noirish The Capture (1950) with Lew Ayres, Teresa Wright, Victor Jory and Barry Kelley in a story directed by a young John Sturges. It was based on a screenplay by Niven Busch (who was also the producer). Was this independent movie filmed entirely in Mexico? The ma...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Several times I've read interviews with Ayres when the subject of some of his work comes up, such as his movies with James Whale and others. He seems to have had a tendency to say things like "I wasn't ready for him then" when critiquing his own work with challenging directors. Do you thi...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Night World is one of those gems of a movie. I especially like seeing people like Boris Karloff playing the club owner, for people only familiar with him as toughs or in monster movies, he's very charming and easy. Lew Ayres and Mae Clarke had just worked on the film Impatient Maiden and had wonderf...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Core,

You are correct about Dracula. But Universal wanted to use him in romantic melodramas (often B pictures). Doorway to Hell was done as a loan to Warner Bros, and one of his more unusual roles.

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

PinkPeril Dr. Kildare had the same love interest throughout the series. I had read that when the Nurse Mary and the good Dr were to finally tie the knot, Laraine Day was sick of the character and wanted out permanently. So the character was killed off. Did Lew have any opinions on whether or not Nur...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Sue Sue Applegate I have also been doing a big a research on the Barrymores lately, and I especially revere Lionel and Ethel. Any comments about Lew's relationship with Lionel during his Dr. Kildare years? They adored one another almost immediately and became good friends until Lionel's death. They ...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Sue Sue Applegate Alters of the East was not so much a single documentary, but a series of short films he presented as a traveling show (similar to Al Gore's original powerpoint presentation with an Inconvenient Truth). It wasn't until he re-edited the films and included a new segment on Christiani...

Re: All About Ayres: The Q & A with Lew Ayres' Biographer

Always a pleasure,JackFavell Can you tell me about his relationship with Ida Lupino in more detail? Maybe some anecdotes or things that she said about him or he said about her? How did they meet? What kept their friendship going? Lew and Ida were neighbors when she was just starting in Hollywood and...
