Re: Summer Under the Stars August 2014 Schedule on TCM

I like Pitfall , too, Moira. I guess I really like Dick Powell... I've seen a lot of his films and like them. Love Cornered for Powell's rough, angry performance; his quietness in The Tall Target ; his humor in Murder My Sweet and The Bad and the Beautiful . But I actually like Powell as the boy sin...

Oops! Sorry Stone, I swear your post didn't pop up until just now. So we both mentioned 10 (ugh) RIllington Place. Yikes!

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

I sadly realized Attenborough had passed away while watching TCM a few minutes ago. Ack! Another great talent has gone. No one has mentioned his sensitive first performance in In Which We Serve or the chilling portrayal of John (ugh) Christie in 10 Rillington Place (a movie I will not forget and wil...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

We saw The Hundred Foot Journey last weekend as well. My admiration for Lasse Hallstrom as a director continues. He creates vivid, beautiful milieux and painfully human characters in all his movies and this was no exception. I was just the teeniest bit disappointed in the script, it hammered home ce...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I didn't see it this time, but I watched it once before... yeah, it was a mess alright, but Quinn somehow rose above it. At the end when he walks away, it was like those messed up kids were asking Quinn to come back and give them some acting lessons.... :D

Re: Erich von Stroheim is 125 Years Young Today!

Hi Joe!

Looking back at this thread, I just wanted to post an update. I've now seen La Grande Illusion...twice. And now that I have, Stroheim seems so much more soulful to me. Next up will be The Great Flamarion.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Oh darn it! I missed Pay or Die! Now I wish I'd seen it. Maybe in another 7 years it will be on again... :D Back to Bataan is one of the few war movies I can actually sit through. Maybe it's because I am a big fan of Anthony Quinn or maybe it's that it portrays others besides Americans with somethin...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

OMG, Maven! This is true food for thought. I have often thought about these very subjects in regards to classic film... but you tied this all together in a really thoughtful way... and OMG! To compare Hildy to Herbert Marshall in Trouble in Paradise ? C'est BRILLIANT, une idee genie! I am pleased wi...

Though maybe it's a tad more modern as far as the time period you are discussing, I've always thought that Yankee Doodle Dandy portrayed stage shows from the earlier era particularly well - and oooh that lighting! Love the uplighting as if there were actual footlights at the front of the stage. http...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Fossy, I absolutely love Confession. It's my fave Kay Francis performance. She's excellent, dark and tormented and strong. The ending you described does not sound like the ending I remember, but perhaps I am getting it confused with another of the Madame X type films made in the 30's. Confession is ...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Loved your review of Double Harness , Tee. Yes, I see the Ann Harding/Mary Astor connection - both smart women who don't pull punches, throaty voiced, upright comportment and temperament...straight shooting, steadfast and direct ( but not above a little manipulation to get what they want). I really ...

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

I heard the TCM Remembers theme and ran to the living room. There was Bacall, sultry, smoky, tough. I'll admit I shed tears. We won't see anyone like this tough, sexy, smart woman again. SO sad today.

Re: Musings on The Misfits

Sandy K - So good to see you posting! I stayed away from The Misfits for so long - I was kind of afraid of the movie. I thought that maybe I would see the mark of death upon the cast. I was so wrong! It wowed me. Marilyn gave the performance of a lifetime. She WAS Roslynn. So gentle, so frail and fr...

OMG! OMG! OMG! I am SOOOOO excited by this, your newfound love, Tee! though I have no idea how your Sammykins will take the news....I picture him sinking dramatically into a deep 1930's style leather armchair, resting his head in his hands wearily.... then waiting patiently for your passion to cool ...

Hahahahahahaha! You guys are the best! Needed that laugh right now. Travel points well taken.... except for that last one, Maven.
