Re: Vertigo remake
Remakes have a long tradition in cinema, of course. Sometimes I'm happier with the remake than the original. Hell, Hitch even remade his own film once! However...I don't want to see someone else's take on a Hitchcock film again. I've seen two instances of this, both the same property (Psycho). One w...

Re: I Just Watched...
Saturday we watched Libeled Lady, another in a line of my attempts to get my fiancee into the classics. We also watched trailers for 4 other Powell/Loy movies, all of which she said she'd like to watch, so those will be coming up in the next several weeks. Libeled Lady, as you may recall, is quite t...

Re: I Just Watched...
Maverick was basically a retread of the first film. I enjoyed watching it (Tom Cruise seldom disappoints really), but I really don't understand all the hype around it, much less the Best Picture nomination.

Re: Really? You've NEVER seen that Classic Film?
I don't find the birds in "The Birds" scary at all. In fact, when they attack the school kids, I think it was because they were so sick of that annoying song that the kids were singing. The birds were really doing everyone a favor. This will likely be the funniest thing I see today. I sho...

Re: Marilyn Monroe
Sometimes the simplest explanations are the correct ones. Marilyn had a problem with sleeping pills, and took too many, then died in her sleep. The end. Was this habit exacerbated by her various relationships with Lawford, the Kennedys, and living in the Hollywood world? Absolutely factors...and I b...

Re: Two Great Actors In One Film
My avatar says Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey.
Loads of movies with dual major stars though, as noted earlier in the thread.
Grant again with Robert Mitchum in The Grass is Greener, just to stick with him. The list would be quite long.

Re: Really? You've NEVER seen that Classic Film?
I agree with you here. Another film that my generation seems to have inexplicable nostalgia for is "Hocus Pocus." I have no idea why. I saw it exactly once, when it came out in 1993 when I was 9 and that was enough. Never once have I felt compelled to re-visit it. Just last year, I had to...

Re: Really? You've NEVER seen that Classic Film?
Another film I've never seen: Mildred Piece (1945) . Have read that Joan Crawford is very good in it, but haven't seen anything of hers except Grand Hotel (1932) that I've liked. It's funny how some stars just leave us cold, despite their fame and longevity. I feel the same about Crawford, even to ...

[...] that, and My Man Godfrey. I'm sticking with the ones that I think have the most lasting appeal for now, before going full force into any 30s farce movies. You know, the ones with everyone walking around in tuxedos throwing out snappy banter. :) I love them, but they aren't the place to start....

Re: I Just Watched...
I have been getting my fiancée interested in classic films. We started with the Thin Man series, and she's enjoying them so far. On Saturday we watched Shadow of the Thin Man, which is probably the last truly good one in the series. We'll finish them up anyway, of course, because we both enjoy Myrna...

Re: Really? You've NEVER seen that Classic Film?
My generation (I was born in 1984) seems to have this nostalgia for "The Goonies" and I find it to be very meh. It's fine, but it's hardly the best film I've ever seen, nor is it a film that I need to see again and again. The only thing that keeps me from ignoring it completely is that it...

Re: OBITUARIES
Frazetta was/is THE Edgar Rice Burroughs artist to me, with his memorable John Carter and Tarzan cover paintings. Also Robert E Howard (Conan). I have a few prints of his hanging around the house.

Re: Really? You've NEVER seen that Classic Film?
Up until last year, I had never seen The Goonies. I felt like I was JUST on the cusp of too old to identify with the young kids in the movie, and too young to identify with the older teens. I just couldn't get interested in seeing it. Meanwhile no one else in my age group and younger had that issue,...
