i've looked out for this movie but it's never been shown over here that I've seen. The only other dramatic role I've seen Gene Kelly in is in Inherit The Wind. He is better in that movie.

'Interesting Failure' is a good way to categorise Christmas Holiday. I think Gene made this film before Hollywood had decided how best to use his talents.

I watched Broken Lullaby a 1932 Ernst Lubtisch film, not a comedy for once. Instead a very thought provoking film. It's story is centres around the death of a German soldier. The French man who kills him becomes haunted by the act and as he has seen the mans name and address he goes to the soldiers ...

I've only seen the Jennifer Jones version as it was sent me by a friend. I didn't know this version existed. I knew of the Norma Shearer Charles Laughton film but have never seen it. I agree Jennifer Jones did seem to be enjoying good health throughout the film. John Geilgud was extremely scary and ...

I saw this film years ago and it frightened me. Robert Mitchum's preacher is one of the scariest character in movies. I've seen him in Cape Fear , I think he is even more frightening in that, more unhinged. Robert De Niro great actor that he is can't come anywhere near the greatness of Robert Mitchu...

As a huge Gene Kelly fan I bought this disc also. I have to hold my hand up and say that Kelly was no great shakes as a dramatic actor, his genius was for dance, choreography and direction. It was interesting to watch but like Annharding I doubt my opinion would change with another viewing.

I've just watched Beggars of Life such a powerful story. It centres around the life of hobos who jump trains and live from hand to mouth. it was made in 1928 the year before the Wall St crash. It shows America's underbelly, it has menace, sweetness, poverty and romance. Three wonderful performances,...

Yes, that's the version. The score is amazing too. I have Charlie Chaplin music on disc.
My daughter asks me to put it on all the time. So we are quite fimilair with the score but it's interesting to see the film again when the score is etched in your mind.

I watched City Lights for the twentieth time but this time I watched it with my five year old daughter. She has seen a couple of Chaplin features but I wasn't convinced she'd get all the sentiment with this film. I needn't have worried. Chaplin had the very same effect on her as he intended with his...

I think I must like my actors with a little arrogance seeing as I would name Chaplin, Gene Kelly and Marlon Brando in my top five watchable male stars :D

I love a good romantic movie.

My favorites Letter From an Unknown Woman, Brief Encounter, The Philadelphia Story, The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Casablanca, Notorious, City Lights, Sunrise and The African Queen.

As you can tell it's not one of my favorite movie genres :D

I watched The Single Standard with Greta Garbo and Nils Asther. I think this is the silent that Greta looks the most alluring in, the styling of the clothes and sets are a joy to look at too. Nils and Greta certainly have chemistry but I think Nils looks a little mad in some scenes. Greta plays Arde...

Dreyer does give the viewer options and leaves it open to the viewers interpretation, with that comes more questions. I felt the same way about Ordet. He's one of my favorite directors.
