Re: Lest We Forget
I was too young to clearly remember December 7th. My first memory of the war was in the first grade, when we stopped moving our hands from our hearts to point to the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance (too much like the Nazi salute). I do, however remember D-Day, as well as the siren at the milk c...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Doris Day is a big favourite of mine. I have her 39 movies. My favourites would be the suspense movie Midnight lace (1960) and the comedy The Glass Bottom Boat (1966). Two great choices which show her extraordinary range. My personal favorite is "No, No, Nanette"" which they filmed a...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I experienced a planned 2-night special that seems worth sharing with the group. The first night, I watched the restored blue-ray of n. The African Queen First time I’ve watched it all the way through since I saw it in the theater during the original release. Happy to say it stands up to time beauti...

I watched Unfaithfully Yours and as long as you aren't expecting Sullivan's Travels and like dark comedy you may like it ... It's different. I've always loved black comedies, and this is one of the best, so much better than the remake. A matter of wit versus mugging. Another great Brit, Peter Selle...

You can't deny the power of his Hamlet, but I've always loved the way he presented Henry V.

From her stance, I'd guess Bette Davis, but if you ever called Bette "beautiful" to her face, she'd laugh her head off. How about another hint?

I truly hope also that a professor overseeing this test is not a movie-lover as the movies which you choose as exemplars are mostly muddled pieces of crap. "I don't swear just for the hell of it. Language is a poor enough means of communication. I think we should use all the words we've got. B...

Really enjoyed it. Those monsters were a hoot. At first, I kept expecting Peter Cushing to turn out to be the mad scientist. Nice to see him playing "straight." I'd say he was a really fine actor, but what British actor isn't?

Thanks for the tip, Eric. I almost passed on this because I didn't recognize the title. Now that I've seen the preview clip, I'll definitely watch it. The British do wacky so much better than we do!

Yes, it certainly would have completed the perfect casting. According to the Whale bio, she refused simply because she was tired of playing the character.Vienna wrote:A shame that Edna May Oliver wasn't available to replay her role of Parthy.

Greatly appreciate the summary, Fosse. It sounds like a version I would very much enjoy.

Thanks for the info. I assume the 3rd version is the 1929 silent. Would be interesting to learn your reaction to that version, either compared to the other two or standing by itself.Fossy wrote:I have three versions of Showboat in my collection.
