Re: 'Round the World Weather Report

OK, I've had it. I go fishing this morning at 4, and it's, like, 25f outside. Emphasis on the F , too. Dear Yankees (which is anyone north of the Red River, as far as I'm concerned)... "If you're not gonna send me snow, then stop sending me freezing air. Send me something to play in, or let me ...

Re: Comfort foods

I would never call my 'plate o' beans' a chili. There are vegetarian chili's but I'll lean toward the purists - "Ain't no such thing - chili is meat - probably bad, tough, the worst meat of the lot. Worse than stew meat - because chili's cooked just as long AND spiced completely to cover up the...

Re: Jack Warner, the actor

Thanks. I wanted to see if you'd expand on any films of his that you'd recommend. What can you tell me about his HUGGETTS films? He's such an 'everyman face', sort of plodding, slow, usually 'underestimated' when his role is one of authority. I've always loved watching 1962's JIGSAW to see the trans...

Re: Blue Lamp/Dixon Of Dock Green

Uh, Jack... hmmm... how can I put this? Let's say I'm glad YouTube has this. I know what "low point" means. I knew beforehand, too. "Awww, ya shouldn't have!" is said with a wink, and almost a plea! ha ha Thanks, Stuart. I'm not sure I could have tolerated any series for 400-odd ...

Re: Method Acting: Blessing or Curse? Living or Dead?

An actor today can (take) a kickboxing class rather... What a winning statement. I give them full license to do that and this works for young adults, maybe into their 30s. Fine. Please - do all the action, all the nudes, etc. Fine. But please, Today's Actors - when your career tops out when you sta...

Re: 'Round the World Weather Report

We went swimming in Austin on Jan 1st. The Mayor along with several thousand others into the spring-fed pools of Austin. Unfortunately, it was all about the same temp - water and air were all about 65-68f. Since then, the air temp has dropped miserably yet we are not given anything to play in - no h...

Re: The whiny thread

I absolutely HATE paying cable companies that donate often a third of a 24-hour-schedule to paid-programs. We pay the TimeWarner-Comcast-AT&T distributors AND the paid-for-programmers pay them. It angers me so much that our legislators continue to make laws protecting them with enforced bundles ...

Re: Comfort foods

Kidney beans, cooked way too long, half a day, re-heated many times. With spicy relish, chopped onions and grated cheddar on them. Dark red beans, bright green & yellow relish, purple onion flecks, and shredded cheddar. Colorful. This was always "a cold day's comfort" to me as I grew u...

Re: Blue Lamp/Dixon Of Dock Green

Thanks for these. I had NO IDEA that Jack Warner was in 400-odd episodes of DIXON OF DOCK GREEN. Wow. This is like James Arness and GUNSMOKE - and hopefully better.

BLUE LAMP has been a long-time favorite and is highly recommended.

Re: John Cassavetes - Life, Death and Freedom

I would not consider myself a Cassavetes fan although I've watched a lot of his films. I like stumbling across Blast Of Silence or World's Greatest SInner , and I can't quite analyze why I enjoy those oddball films but don't have a more positive appreciation for Cassavetes' work. The one aspect I've...

I'd never seen SCARLET before but I will again and again. Thanks for the great build-up although we're officially collecting anything with Marlene in it. Moira, as for GAMMA PEOPLE - I'm hooked, line'd and sinker'd. Anything that competes with FLYING SAUCER as "loopiest Red Scare film" get...

Re: Shadows of Russia Series: Wed. in Jan. 2010

I doubt we'll ever see anything close to an accurate portrayal of the 20th Century Soviets but I'll watch some of these as if I need additional proof of Hollywood's inability to tell any truthful version. I would have voted for 1950's THE FLYING SAUCER to be included. Talk about Red Scare and who's ...

Re: Method Acting: Blessing or Curse? Living or Dead?

I'm following this topic - here and on TCM - closely because there is so much noise about The Method and I'll be interested to see if my Sherlock cap works well enough to figure it out. I keep thinking of the Woody Allen joke he recites in STARDUST MEMORIES, where he decries the criticism that he's ...

Re: Five Graves to Cairo (1943)

I haven't watched my copy of it yet, but I'm hoping it's a good one. Thru December's Bogart festival, I kept thinking, "I'm shocked so many of his films aren't on DVD" because there were so many good ones, but I still can't believe the name "Bogart" won't sell DVDs off the shelf....
