Re: What recent films have you seen?
Last night we saw THE INTERN and both enjoyed it very much. Excellent cinematography--none of the mannered stuff so common today, just beautifully graduated colors--and set design, with very becoming costumes for Anne Hathaway. Robert De Niro not in a campy part is a big plus; one of his better perf...

Re: Q & A with Jeffrey Spivak about Buzz: The Life & Art of Busby Berkeley
Thanks so much for meeting with us. Earlier this year I got to see a restoration of THE GANG'S ALL HERE on the big screen in all its Technicolor glory. What fun that was. I'm interested in your saying that Berkeley wasn't particularly influenced by the art or psychology of the time. That fits with m...

Re: The Q & A with David Meuel, author of The Noir Western
David, I look forward to reading your book, which sounds very exciting. The Day of the Outlaw, Pursued, The Furies--"noir western" certainly seems to describe those movies, doesn't it? 1. I'm a huge fan of The Furies. This is the film that made me want to see more Anthony Mann films. Is it fair to s...

Thank you so much for chatting with us, and even more for writing about one of our favorite classic actors. I look forward to talking with you again, either online or in person at another festival. The best of luck with your book and with your regular reviewing.

Re: The Q & A with J.R. Jones about THE LIVES OF ROBERT RYAN
We've really had some great questions for J.R. Jones about Robert Ryan. I have a couple of others: 1. I'm a big Ida Lupino fan, and love her work with Robert Ryan in ON DANGEROUS GROUND. Although the material in BEWARE, MY LOVELY, isn't nearly so good, I think both of the stars do their best with wh...

Re: The Q & A with J.R. Jones about THE LIVES OF ROBERT RYAN
I'd like to post these questions from ChiO, whom you know. In fact, I believe you had dinner with him, his wife, and Lisa Ryan recently. Anyway, he has some great questions he wanted me to pass along: Welcome, J.R.! First, thank you again for the marvelous biography of my favorite actor. It is a muc...

Re: The Q & A with J.R. Jones about THE LIVES OF ROBERT RYAN
Welcome to SSO! I've been looking forward to this ever since May when you had such a good conversation with Alan K. Rode after the showing of ON DANGEROUS GROUND at the film noir festival in Palm Springs. By the way, ON DANGEROUS GROUND is being shown this evening on TCM, which is a great introducti...

Re: Welcome to Writer Cari Beauchamp!
Cari,
Thank you so much for chatting with us. I always enjoy your intros at the festival and am looking forward to your new book. It was jaw-dropping to read in your book on Gloria Swanson how Joseph Kennedy swindled her.
The best of look with your writing and your appearances!
David

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare
Richard Johnson was an excellent Cassius in the 1960s JULIUS CAESAR, with John Gielgud a wonderful Caesar and Jason Robards a gosh-awful Brutus. I'm sorry Richard Johnson didn't have a bigger career.

Re: Al Doshna, author of Richard Anderson: At Last, on 6/6-6/7
Hi, Al, It's great learning more about Richard Anderson. He always seemed like one of the actors I would most enjoy getting to know, probably because he's so believable as the intelligent professionals he often played. Is he still in good health for his age? He certainly seemed to be at the TCM fest...

Re: Al Doshna, author of Richard Anderson: At Last, on 6/6-6/7
Thanks so much for chatting with us. I've always been a big fan of Richard Anderson since I was a child. He was always reliable in every role he played. 1. Although the series did not last long, Richard Anderson played a district attorney on Bus Stop , based very loosely on the William Inge play. Di...

Re: What recent films have you seen?
We thoroughly enjoyed TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL , a documentary based on Tab Hunter's memoir of the same name. Tab, looking great at age 83, was in attendance. He lives in Santa Barbara with his long-time partner and works every day caring for the horses who have been an important part of his life. In...

Re: 2015 Palm Springs Film Noir Festival
Thanks, Moira. The print shown of ABANDONED was an archival print from Universal, and it looked beautiful. I have not seen the DVD-R and had never heard of the film before. Because ABANDONED has not been digitized, it's less likely to be shown on TCM. The same is true of the 1951 M , which we saw in...
